> I have been exchanging words with you for ten years, yet it felt like teaching a wine vendor about fasting and reverence—solemn and respectful on the surface, but ultimately still the behavior of a drunkard. Now, reading your letter, I am suddenly awakened from a drunken dream, struck by a pang of sorrow and then swelling with joy. For the whole world is drunk, and if everyone were like you, my sobriety alone would hardly be worth treasuring! After reading your writing, it truly surpasses the ordinary, reaching the depth of someone like Qidiao Kai, and I can see clearly into your heart and mind—how could my joy be any less? Moreover, your persistence in a daily practice schedule reflects the fierce resolve of a true man—this is exactly as it should be! I once said that Su Qin was merely a silver-tongued rhetorician; his ambition was wealth and status, and his efforts were misguided. Yet when he grew lax in his studies, he would tie his hair to a beam or prick his thigh with an awl, and eventually he achieved his goal. If even such a man could do that, how much more should a sage of the world-transcending path accomplish? Is the supreme and wondrous Way worth less than mere gold? King Goujian of Yue endured the shame of defeat at Kuaiji and swore to avenge his kingdom against Wu. He slept on firewood and tasted gall for over twenty years, and ultimately rose to hegemony. Yet the attachments of countless eons—are they worth less than the vengeance against Wu? The imprisonment within the cycle of birth and death, the suffering and humiliation of body and mind—are these not worth more than the shame of Kuaiji? If you do not harbor a gnashing hatred for these, and forget the resolve to sleep on firewood and taste gall, and fail to discipline yourself as if tying your hair to a beam or pricking your thigh with an awl, how else will you fulfill your original vows and wash away this great shame? I have heard that the highest standard is establishing virtue, the next is establishing achievement, and the next is establishing a name. Thus, one who aspires to virtue and the Way places achievement and fame second; one who aspires to achievement and fame places wealth and status second; one who aspires to wealth and status will stop at nothing. If you can truly motivate yourself with the highest standard, then even poverty can be a source of joy—what else could weigh on your mind? Confucius said: "A scholar who aspires to the Way yet is ashamed of poor food and coarse clothing is not worth discussing with." The ancients also said: "If one has the joy of the Way and righteousness, then the body can be set aside." If the body can be set aside, then there is nothing else to worry about! How could you let anything trouble your mind and fail to remain at ease? I urge you to keep striving!
