> Instructions for Zhao Mengqing

> Since you journeyed north, not a day has passed without my gaze turning eastward, hoping for your return. From summer's start to autumn's close, not a word reached me—I grew deeply anxious. Then last evening, your letter suddenly arrived. Opening it, I could almost see your face; reading of your father's condition, I could not stop sighing in wonder. That the world's path should turn so rugged—truly, it has come to this. As you pour out your heart's tangled threads, the cold and warmth of worldly ways—such is merely their nature. Why let them stick like burrs? Surely, if things were otherwise, this would not be a world of turbidity at all! For you bear your father's grievance, and I, in turn, feel shame on your behalf—for you have long indulged in human contrivance without yet hearing the Great Way. I have often said that a man of true stature born between heaven and earth is no idle creature. Even if he cannot pursue the Highest, he should still rouse himself—win fiefs and lordship a thousand miles away, inscribe his deeds upon Mount Yan, let his name be woven into history. To honor his lord and glorify his kin, as plainly as seeing fruit in one's palm—why fuss over petty trifles? This is why Zhong Jun rejected the petty post, and why Ban Chao cast aside his brush. The carving of insects—that petty craft—is no task for a grown man. How much more so for you, whose striking bones and spirited bearing shine with vigor; in youth's full bloom, you may yet seize the hour and strive, fixing your heart on the path of the ancients. In times past, I already spoke deeply with you on this! This trip, though bent by your father's circumstances, may yet become your glory—who can measure? If you can rein your steed within the arena of learning and seek the Great Way, the road back to life's true foundation lies not far; the farther shore is no distant dream. But if you still linger in idle talk and drift through your days in arrogance, take a look at yourself—what are you then? I once remarked that the Wang and Xie clans dazzled their age with their style, yet the ink of the Right Army's pool had not yet dried, and the chessboard of the Eastern Hill was still spread before them! They beheld an army of one hundred thousand armored men as a game of stakes—could these be the sort who merely pass time in laughter and talk? I hope you will strive with all your might. I hear your departure for the precepts is not far off, and it seems we may not part face to face. What comes after—who can say? I leave it to the three lives. With this, I answer your life's story, to tie the karmic bond of our escape from this world.
