### 馴伏第五頌

> Verse 5: Taming

綠楊陰下古溪邊，放去收來得自然，日暮碧雲芳草地，牧童歸去不須牽。

> Under the willow shade, beside the ancient stream, Letting go and reining in are both spontaneous. At dusk, amid blue clouds and fragrant grass, The cowherd returns home—no need to tug the rope.

> The Original Song of Puming

閒放林間與水邊，橫騎短笛任悠然，歸來一帶煙霞晚，瀟灑歌謠不假牽。

> Leisurely relaxing in the woods and by the water, Playing a simple flute while riding freely and at ease— Returning home as evening mist and sunset glow gather, Singing carefree songs without any need for restraint.

> Xiu Shan's Response in Matching Rhyme

收來放去古溪邊，風月隨緣自悄然，水草不思無底事，相看撒手竟忘牽。

> Gathered in, let go—by the ancient stream's edge, Wind and moon come as they may, naturally serene. Waterweeds think nothing of the bottomless, Gazing together, releasing hands, forgetting the tether.

箬菴問

> Ruo'an asked:

只在平田煙柳邊，鞭繩拋卻坐翛然，暮山鐘動上方月，恁麼歸來不假牽。

> In the misty willows by the flat field, I cast aside the rope and sit freely. At dusk, the mountain bell stirs the moon above— Returning thus, I need no tethering.

山茨際

戴寒鴉，履芳草，毛骨馨香，見者道好。

> Wearing a robe of frost, stepping on fragrant grass, bones and skin carry a pure scent—whoever sees me says, “How wonderful.”

玉林琇

遊行阡陌露堂堂，俗塵垢蠲除野性忘，早去晚歸能穩步，山根茅屋臥斜陽。

> Walking along country paths, wide and bright, I've shed the dust of worldly grime, let go of wild urges. Early out, late back, I walk a steady pace; By the mountain foothills, a thatched hut rests beneath the setting sun.

牧雲門

暖風晴日柳溪邊，俛首循人意悄然，花落郊原春色晚，相隨歸去不須牽。

> In a warm breeze under a clear sky, by the willow-lined stream, I bow my head softly, following the quiet heart's own theme. Flowers fall across the fields—spring colors linger late, No need to pull—just follow, and we shall find our gate.

聞谷印

高深蹊徑曲無邊，相狎相馴已信然，楊柳陰斜紅日轉，鼻頭繩斷不須牽。

> A profound and winding path stretches endlessly before me, Accustomed and trained, I've come to trust my way. The willow's shadow slants as the red sun turns, The nose-rope has snapped—no need to pull or lead.

> Beside the ancient stream, on the willow-shaded bank, Coming and going freely, peaceful and serene. Now let go of constant binds and chains, Throw away the rope's end—no need to pull or strain.
