> As stated in the \*Abhidharma Mahāvibhāṣā Śāstra\*, there are thirty-two kinds of heavens. The Desire Realm has ten, the Form Realm has eighteen, and the Formless Realm has four, making a total of thirty-two heavens. The ten heavens of the Desire Realm are: (1) the Heaven of Great Hands, (2) the Heaven of Flower Garlands, (3) the Heaven of Constant Indulgence, (4) the Heaven of Sun, Moon, and Stars, (5) the Heaven of the Four Great Kings, (6) the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, (7) the Heaven of Yama, (8) the Tusita Heaven, (9) the Heaven of Joyful Transformations, and (10) the Heaven of Control over Others' Creations. The eighteen heavens of the Form Realm are as follows. In the First Dhyāna, there are three heavens: (1) the Heaven of Brahmā's Multitude, (2) the Heaven of Brahmā's Ministers, and (3) the Great Brahmā Heaven. In the Second Dhyāna, there are three heavens: (1) the Heaven of Lesser Light, (2) the Heaven of Immeasurable Light, and (3) the Heaven of Radiant Sound. In the Third Dhyāna, there are also three heavens: (1) the Heaven of Lesser Purity, (2) the Heaven of Immeasurable Purity, and (3) the Heaven of Universal Purity. In the Fourth Dhyāna, there are nine heavens: (1) the Heaven of Blessed Birth, (2) the Heaven of Blessings and Fortune, (3) the Heaven of Vast Fruits, (4) the Heaven of No Thought, (5) the Heaven of No Affliction, (6) the Heaven of No Heat, (7) the Heaven of Excellent Manifestation, (8) the Heaven of Excellent Vision, and (9) the Heaven of Ultimate Form. In the Formless Realm, there are four heavens: (1) the Heaven of Infinite Space, (2) the Heaven of Infinite Consciousness, (3) the Heaven of Nothingness, and (4) the Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception. Someone might ask, "Among these thirty-two heavens, how many are inhabited only by ordinary beings, and how many only by sages?" The answer is: two heavens are inhabited solely by ordinary beings, five solely by sages, and the remaining twenty-five are shared by both ordinary beings and sages. The two heavens inhabited only by ordinary beings are: first, the Great Brahmā Heaven in the First Dhyāna, and second, the Heaven of No Thought in the Fourth Dhyāna, which is exclusively the abode of non-Buddhists. The five heavens inhabited only by sages are the five Pure Abodes from the Heaven of Vast Fruits upward—namely, the Heaven of No Affliction, the Heaven of No Heat, and so on—where only Anāgāmins (Non-Returners) and Arhats reside. Even if an ordinary being were to be born in those heavens, they would have to be progressing toward the state of an Anāgāmin, having attained the Fourth Dhyāna, and cultivated the karma of absorption in the realm of the unconditioned. Only after cultivating from the first to the ninth level of such practice could they be born there. The \*Nirvāṇa Sūtra\* speaks of four kinds of heavens: (1) the worldly heaven, (2) the heaven of rebirth, (3) the heaven of purity, and (4) the heaven of meaning. The worldly heaven refers to kings and rulers. The heaven of rebirth refers to the realms from the Heaven of the Four Great Kings up to the Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception. The heaven of purity refers to the stages from Stream-Enterer (Sotāpanna) up to Pratyekabuddha. The heaven of meaning refers to the great bodhisattvas of the Ten Abodes, for they can deeply understand the meaning of all dharmas and see that all things are empty in nature.
