> Joy and Suffering

如《婆沙論》說：鬼中苦者，即彼無威德鬼。恒常饑渴，累年不聞漿水之名，豈得逢斯甘膳？設值大河欲飲，即變為炬火，縱得入口，即腹爛焦。第二鬼中樂者，即彼有威德中，富足豐美，身服天衣，口餐天供，任情遊戲。然人鬼殊趣，受報分顯，不及於人，雖有威德，以報卑劣，常畏於人。

> As stated in the \*Abhidharma Great Commentary\*: Among hungry ghosts, those who suffer are the powerless ones. They endure constant hunger and thirst, year after year never even hearing the mention of water or broth—how could they ever encounter fine food? Even if they come across a great river and try to drink, the water turns into blazing fire the moment they approach; and should it somehow enter their mouths, their bellies burn and rot away. The second type, the joyful hungry ghosts, are the powerful ones: they live in abundance and splendor, clothed in heavenly garments, feasting on celestial offerings, and freely indulging in pleasure. Yet the realms of humans and ghosts remain distinct, and their karmic rewards are clearly different. Even with their power and glory, because their station is inherently low, they still live in constant fear of humans.
