> According to the \*Mahīśāsaka Vinaya\*: "Seven days after the Buddha attained awakening, he experienced the bliss of liberation. Five hundred carts carrying offerings of honey arrived, and the four heavenly kings presented him with bowls. After accepting them, the Buddha taught the Three Refuges. After another seven days, the dragon king Manasvin offered him non-human food. Seven days later, Sena offered food, and his four sisters took refuge in the Three Refuges. After another seven days, Brahmā came and invited the Buddha to turn the wheel of Dharma." The \*Lalitavistara Sūtra\* says: "At that time, Brahmā, along with sixty-eight thousand Brahmā attendants, came to the Buddha's presence, bowed at his feet, and asked him to turn the wheel of Dharma. The Buddha accepted the invitation and said, 'In my past lives, I made offerings to sixty billion Buddhas in Vārāṇasī; it is fitting that I turn the wheel of Dharma here.'" The \*Middle Length Origins Sūtra\* states: "The World-Honored One thought, 'In the past, I passed by the brahmin ascetics Āḷāra and Udaka, who treated me with courtesy. I should go and liberate them.' A voice from the sky said, 'These two men passed away seven days ago.' He then thought of Udraka Rāmaputra, but the sky again announced, 'He passed away yesterday.' Then he remembered that his father had previously sent five men—Kauṇḍinya, Aśvajit, Bhadrika, Daśabala Kāśyapa, and Mahānāma—who had served him diligently. He decided to go and liberate them." The \*Turning the Wheel of Dharma Sūtra\* says: "The Buddha was sitting under a tree at Deer Park when a natural wheel of Dharma flew through the sky and began turning before him. The Buddha reached out his hand to stop it and said, 'Since beginningless time, I have been revolving due to name and form. Now my craving and clinging are exhausted; I will no longer flow onward!' The wheel immediately stopped." The \*Twelve Years' Journey Sūtra\* says: "From the eighth day of the fourth month to the fifteenth day of the seventh month, the Buddha sat under a tree—this was year one. In year two, he taught the Dharma to five people at Deer Park. In year three, he taught Uruvilvā Kāśyapa and his two brothers, gathering a thousand monks. In year four, he taught dragons and spirits on Mount Mu-tou. In year five, he liberated Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana—Śāriputra attained the highest fruit in seven days, Maudgalyāyana in fifteen. In year six, Sudatta and Prince Jeta built a monastery for the Buddha, with twelve Buddha shrines, seventy-two lecture halls, three thousand six hundred rooms, and five hundred towers. In year seven, at Koyāyana Park, he taught the Perfection of Wisdom Sūtra to eight bodhisattvas including Bhadrapāla, illuminating the practices of suffering. In year eight, at Willow Mountain, he taught King Tuṣita's younger brother. In year nine, in a swamp, he taught Aṅgulimāla. In year ten, he traveled through Magadha and taught King Puṣpa. In year eleven, under the Tree of Fear, he taught Maitreya the \*Origins Sūtra\*, which is the foundation of practice. In year twelve, he returned to his father's kingdom and taught 84,000 people of the Śākya clan." The \*Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra\* says: "Sixteen years after the Buddha's awakening, between the form and desire realms, a great jeweled staircase appeared. The assembly ascended the middle stair together and rose into the sky." The \*Distinguishing Merits Sūtra\* says: "In the twenty-fifth year \[of the Buddha's ministry\], he resided in various countries, but he stayed longest in this one \[Śrāvastī\], because it abounded in rare treasures and the people were highly virtuous. The Jetavana Monastery had miraculous signs. When the assembly gathered, thousands of monkeys and birds came to listen to the Dharma, remaining perfectly silent. When the teaching ended, they returned to their places. As soon as the wooden drum was sounded, they gathered again. Because the country was full of kindness, different species were drawn to it." Thus the \*Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom\* says: "The city of Śrāvastī had nine hundred thousand households—three hundred thousand saw the Buddha with their own eyes, three hundred thousand believed but did not see him, and three hundred thousand neither saw nor heard of him." The \*Sarvāstivāda Commentary\* says: "The Buddha first attained perfect awakening on the eighth day of the second month when the star Viśākhā appeared. He was also born on the eighth day of the second month when Viśākhā appeared. He turned the wheel of Dharma on the eighth day of the eighth month when Viśākhā appeared, and he entered parinirvāṇa on the eighth day of the eighth month when Viśākhā appeared."
