> Stories of Spiritual Response

> During the reign of Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han Dynasty, at the White Horse Temple in Luoyang, there was a monk named Kasyapa Matanga, originally from central India. He was refined in manner and versed in both Mahayana and Hinayana scriptures, often traveling to spread the Dharma. In the third year of Yongping (60 CE), Emperor Ming dreamed one night of a golden figure flying through the air toward him. He gathered his ministers to interpret the dream. The learned傅毅 replied, "I have heard that in the Western Regions there is a deity called the Buddha. What Your Majesty dreamed of must surely be him!" The emperor agreed and sent the courtier Cai Yin and the scholar Qin Jing, among others, to India in search of the Buddhist teachings. When Cai Yin and his party arrived there, they encountered Matanga and invited him back to China. Matanga, resolute in his vow to propagate the Dharma and undaunted by hardship, crossed the desert and journeyed to Luoyang. Emperor Ming received him with great honor and had a pure retreat built outside the western gate of the city to house him, naming it the White Horse Temple. According to tradition, a foreign king once ordered the destruction of all temples, but only the Zhaoti Temple had not yet been destroyed. One night, a white horse circled the stupa, neighing in grief, and the king halted the destruction of the temples. For this reason, the Zhaoti Temple was renamed "White Horse." At the White Horse Temple, there was also Dharmaratna, a central Indian who claimed to have recited tens of thousands of chapters of scriptures and was a teacher to scholars in India. When Cai Yin arrived in that country, Dharmaratna and Matanga, sharing the same aspiration to spread the Dharma, journeyed together and returned with them. After a short time, he became proficient in Chinese. Cai Yin, having obtained scriptures in the Western Regions, had them translated. The so-called "Ten Grounds," "The Life of the Buddha," and the "Sutra of Forty-Two Chapters," among five works in total, mark the beginning of the Buddhist canon in China.

> Once, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty was digging the bottom of Kunming Lake when he discovered some black ashes. He asked Dongfang Shuo about them. Dongfang Shuo said, "I don't know about this matter; you might ask a foreign monk from the Western Regions." Later, when the monk Dharmaratna arrived, people questioned him about it. He said, "When the world comes to an end, the fire of kalpa will burn everything to ashes—these are those ashes."

> According to the \*Record of Anomalies\* in the \*Book of Zhou\*: In the twenty-fourth year of King Zhao of Zhou's reign, in the year of Jiayin, on the eighth day of the fourth month, rivers, springs, and ponds suddenly overflowed, well water surged out, and mountains and rivers trembled. A five-colored light pierced through the Great Bear constellation, spreading across the western sky, which turned entirely blue and red. The Grand Astrologer Su You reported: "A great sage has been born in the West. Within a thousand years, his teachings will reach this land." King Zhao then ordered a stone inscription to be carved and buried in front of the celestial shrine in the southern suburbs. This was the time of the Buddha's birth. Prime Minister Lü Hou rode one of the eight swift horses to seek the Buddha, thereby offering prayers for protection.

> In the fifty-third year of King Mu of Zhou, in the year of Renshen, on the fifteenth day of the second month, at dawn, a sudden violent wind arose, damaging houses and breaking trees. The earth trembled, the sky darkened, and twelve white rainbows appeared in the west. The Grand Historian Hu Duo said: "The sage of the West has passed into extinction." This was the sign of the Buddha's parinirvana. <note place="inline">End of Volume Two</note>
