> The \*Sutra on the Arising of the Bodhi Mind\* says: "At that time, the brahmin Mahakashyapa asked the Buddha, 'World-Honored One! Those who arouse the Bodhi mind—how much merit should they gather?' Then the World-Honored One spoke in verses: 'If all beings in this Buddha-land were established in faith and moral discipline, even that supreme accumulation of merit would not equal one sixteenth of the merit of the Bodhi mind.'" The \*Nirvana Sutra\* also says: "The Buddha praised Mahakashyapa: 'If there are beings who have aroused the Bodhi mind at the feet of as many Buddhas as there are sands in the Hiraṇyavatī River, they will then be able, in an evil age, to uphold this sutra without slandering it. Good man! If there are those who have aroused the Bodhi mind at the feet of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of one Ganges River, they will then be able, in an evil age, not to slander this sutra, to love and delight in it—yet they cannot explain it broadly for others. If there are beings who have aroused the Bodhi mind at the feet of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of two Ganges Rivers, they will then be able, in an evil age, not to slander this Dharma, to understand it correctly, to believe and delight in it, to uphold, recite, and study it—yet they still cannot explain it broadly for others. If there are beings who have aroused the Bodhi mind at the feet of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of three Ganges Rivers, they will then be able, in an evil age, not to slander this Dharma, to uphold, recite, and study it, and to write out copies of the scripture. Though they teach it to others, they have not yet grasped its profound meaning. If there are beings who have aroused the Bodhi mind at the feet of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of four Ganges Rivers, they will then be able, in an evil age, not to slander this Dharma, to uphold, recite, and study it, to write out copies of the scripture, and to explain for others one sixteenth of its meaning—yet even so, their explanation is incomplete. If there are beings who have aroused the Bodhi mind at the feet of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of five Ganges Rivers, they will then be able, in an evil age, not to slander this sutra, to uphold, recite, and study it, and to explain broadly for others eight sixteenths of its meaning. If there are those who have aroused the Bodhi mind at the feet of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of six Ganges Rivers, they will then be able, in an evil age, not to slander this sutra, to uphold, recite, and study it, and to explain broadly for others twelve sixteenths of its meaning. If there are beings who have aroused the Bodhi mind at the feet of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of seven Ganges Rivers, they will then be able, in an evil age, not to slander this Dharma, to uphold, recite, and study it, and to explain broadly for others fourteen sixteenths of its meaning. If there are beings who have aroused the Bodhi mind at the feet of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of eight Ganges Rivers, they will then be able, in an evil age, not to slander this Dharma, to uphold, recite, and study it, and also to encourage others to write it out—themselves able to hear and receive it, and also encouraging others to hear and receive it.'"
