後周時有張元，字孝始，河北萬城人也。年甫十六，其祖喪明三年，元恒憂泣，晝夜經行，以祈福祐。復讀《藥師經》云「盲者得視」之言。遂請七僧，燃七燈，七日七夜轉讀《藥師經》。每日行道，作天人師。乃云：「元為孫不孝，使祖喪明。今以燈光普施法界，祖目見明，元求代闇。」如此殷勤，經於七日。其夜夢見一老翁，以一金錍療其祖目。謂元曰：「勿憂悲也，三日已後，祖目必差。」元於夢中喜躍無申，遂即驚覺，乃更遍告家人大小。三日之後。祖目果差。

> During the Later Zhou dynasty, there was a man named Zhang Yuan, whose courtesy name was Xiao Shi. He was from Wancheng in Hebei. When he had just turned sixteen, his grandfather had been blind for three years. Yuan was constantly worried and wept, walking back and forth day and night to pray for blessings and protection. He also read the Medicine Buddha Sutra, which states, "The blind shall regain their sight." So he invited seven monks, lit seven lamps, and for seven days and seven nights they recited the Medicine Buddha Sutra. Every day, he walked in meditation, acting as a teacher of gods and humans. He then said, "Yuan, as a grandson, has been unfilial, causing my grandfather to lose his sight. Now I offer this lamp light to the entire realm of reality. May my grandfather's eyes see clearly again, and I ask to take on the darkness in his place." With such earnest devotion, he continued for seven days. That night, he dreamed of an old man who used a golden probe to treat his grandfather's eyes. The old man said to Yuan, "Do not worry or grieve. After three days, your grandfather's eyes will surely heal." In his dream, Yuan leapt with joy, unable to express it, and then suddenly woke up. He then told everyone in the family, young and old. Three days later, his grandfather's eyes indeed recovered.

唐蜀川漢州，三學山寺，至唐開皇十二年，寺東璧，有佛跡現，長尺八寸，闊七寸，兼有神燈，自空而現，每夕常爾，齋日則多。有州宰意欲尋之，乘馬來寺。十里以外，空燈列見，漸近漸昧。返還十里，如前還現。每於月六齋日常出。

> In the state of Shu, at Sanxue Mountain Temple in Hanzhou, during the twelfth year of the Kaihuang era of the Tang Dynasty, a Buddha's footprint appeared on the eastern wall of the temple, measuring one foot eight inches in length and seven inches in width. Additionally, divine lanterns appeared from the sky every evening, especially frequent on fasting days. A local official wished to investigate this phenomenon and rode his horse to the temple. From ten li away, the lanterns were clearly visible in the sky, but as he approached, they gradually faded. When he returned ten li back, they appeared clearly again as before. This occurred regularly on the six fasting days of each lunar month.
