漢周亞夫，絳侯勃之次子也。初許負相之曰：「君三年而侯，五年而相，其貴無上，然卒以餓死。」亞夫曰：「嘻。吾何緣如此？若既大貴，又何故餓死？」負曰：「不然。從理入口，餓死法也。」後三年，絳侯世子有罪黜，而亞夫襲侯。及破吳楚，有大功為丞相。以忠蹇疆直，數犯景帝，竟下獄餓死。

梁州招提寺，有沙門名琰，年幼出家。初作沙彌時，有一相師語琰師：「雖大聰明，智慧鋒銳。然命短，壽不經旬日。」琰師既聞斯語，遂詣諸大德，共相評論：「作何福勝，得命延長？」大德答云：「依佛聖教，受持《金剛般若經》功德最大。」琰入山，志心受持般若，經餘五年，因出山見相師。相師驚怪：「修何功德，得壽命長？」琰具述前意，相師歎之。琰後學問優長，善弘經論。匡究佛法，年逾九十。

> In Liangzhou's Zhaoti Temple, there was a monk named Yan who became a renunciant at a young age. When he first became a novice, a fortune-teller told him, "Though you are highly intelligent and sharp in wisdom, your life is short—you won't survive more than ten days." Upon hearing this, Yan went to consult the senior monastics, asking, "What kind of merit could extend my life?" The elders replied, "According to the Buddha's teachings, reciting and upholding the Diamond Prajñā Sūtra brings the greatest merit." Yan then retreated to the mountains and devoted himself to reciting the sūtra for over five years. When he came out and met the fortune-teller again, the latter was astonished and asked, "What merit have you cultivated to gain such a long life?" Yan recounted what had happened, and the fortune-teller was deeply impressed. Later, Yan excelled in scholarship, skillfully expounding the scriptures and treatises. He upheld the Dharma throughout his life, living to over ninety years of age.

梁鍾山開善寺，沙門智藏，俗姓顧氏，吳郡吳人也。有墅姥攻相，謂藏曰：「法師聰辨蓋世，天下流名。但恨年命不長，可至三十一。」時年二十有九，聞斯促報，於是講解頓息，竭誠修道。發大誓願：「不出寺門。」遂探經藏，得《金剛般若》，受持讀誦，畢命奉之。至所厄年末，以香湯洗浴，淨室誦經，以待死至。俄聞空中聲曰：「善男子，汝往年三十一者，是報盡期。由般若經力，得倍壽矣。」

> In the Liang dynasty, at the Kāishàn Temple on Mount Zhōng, there lived a monk named Zhìzàng. His secular surname was Gù, and he came from Wú commandery in the Wú region. An old village woman skilled in physiognomy once told him: "Master, your wisdom and eloquence are unmatched in the world, and your fame has spread far and wide. But I regret to say your life will not be long—you will live only to the age of thirty-one." At that time, Zhìzàng was twenty-nine. Upon hearing of this short span, he immediately ceased his lectures and devoted himself wholeheartedly to spiritual practice. He made a great vow: "I shall not leave the temple gates." He then searched through the scriptural treasury and found the \*Diamond Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra\*. He took it up, upheld it, recited it, and vowed to honor it with his very life. When the year of his predicted end arrived, he bathed in fragrant hot water, purified his dwelling, and recited the sūtra, awaiting death. Soon, a voice from the sky proclaimed: "Good man, your original lifespan of thirty-one was the end of your karmic destiny. But through the power of the Prajñā Sūtra, your life has been doubled."
