The Brief Commentary on the Yishan Repentance and Vows Text is an annotation by the eminent monk Shuyu of the Qing Dynasty on the Yishan Repentance and Vows Text. The author, Shuyu, was a renowned Vinaya master in the early Qing period, who deeply studied the precepts and dedicated himself to propagating the Pure Land teachings. This work was composed during a time when Buddhist liturgical practices flourished, aiming to elucidate the profound principles underlying repentance and vow-making. The text systematically explains both the ritual forms and doctrinal meanings within the vows, integrating the rigor of the Vinaya school with the practical methods of the Pure Land tradition, guiding devotees in properly performing repentance and making vows before the Buddha. This commentary is regarded as an important document in the study of Chinese Buddhist repentance rituals, exerting a profound influence on later Buddhist liturgical practices and holding authoritative status among commentaries on Buddhist ceremonial texts.
