### 澧州藥山利昱禪師青九梁山觀嗣

> Master Li Yu of Yaoshan in Lizhou<note place="inline">Disciple of Guan of Qingjiu Liangshan</note>

僧問：「格外之談，乞師垂示。」師曰：「要道也不難。」曰：「恁麼則萬仞碧潭，許垂一線也。」師曰：「大眾笑汝。」

> A monk asked, "Master, please share some words beyond the ordinary." The master said, "If you want to hear it, it's not difficult." The monk said, "In that case, even a deep, clear pool would allow a single line to be cast." The master said, "The assembly is laughing at you."

拈云：「者僧被藥山鈍置則已，格外之談畢竟作麼生道？三面黧奴腳踏月，兩頭白牯手拏煙。」

> Commentary says: “That monk was bluntly put in his place by Yaoshan, and that was that. But this talk beyond conventions—after all, how should it be expressed? The dark slave on three sides treads the moon; the white ox on two ends grasps smoke in hand.”
