### 江州圓通真際禪師青十三寶峰照嗣

> Master Zhenji of Yuantong Temple, Jiangzhou

常有偈曰：「不因言句不因人，不因物色不因聲，夜半吹燈方就枕，忽然這裡已天明。」

> There is a verse that goes: > Not because of words, not because of people, > Not because of appearances, not because of sounds. > At midnight, the lamp is blown out, and one lies down to sleep— > Suddenly, right here, dawn has already broken.

拈云：「天台木上座云：『我悔當時不與圓通說破，致令伊向色聲明暗裡作活計，至今無出身之路。』眾中莫有為圓通雪屈者麼？出來！我且問你：不因聲色人言，且道：因箇甚麼？莫是因吹燈也無？且喜沒交涉。畢竟如何？三級浪高魚化龍，痴人猶戽夜塘水。」

> The commentator said: "The master of Tiantai remarked: 'I regret not having clarified things for Yuantong at that time, causing him to remain trapped in the realm of forms and sounds, unable to find a path to liberation even now.' Is there anyone among you who can vindicate Yuantong's grievance? Step forward! Let me ask you: If not through sounds and forms, then through what would you come to understand? Could it be through blowing out a lamp? That would be completely off the mark. So what is the ultimate truth? When the waves of the three-tiered waterfall rise high, fish transform into dragons—yet fools still scoop water from the night pond."
