### 明州天童雲外岫禪師青十八直翁舉嗣

> Master Yunwai Xiu of Tiantong Temple, Mingzhou <note place="inline">Successor of Qing Shiba Zhiweng Ju</note>

垂語：「天童今日大死去也，你作麼生救？天童今日大死去也，你不要相救。天童今日大死去也，阿誰與我同行？」

> A Teaching: "Today, Tiantong has passed away greatly. How will you save me? Today, Tiantong has passed away greatly. Do not try to save me. Today, Tiantong has passed away greatly. Who will walk alongside me?"

拈云：「盡大地人一死便休，唯有天童三死不了，如今鄉情難遏，不免為之助哀。第一問著語，云：『待靈照姐來看日早晚？』第二問，云：『和尚甚麼年中已造壽塔？』第三問，云：『和尚自喚第四婦好，須要教者老漢缽袋子雙手分付。』」

> Pick up the matter: "Every person under heaven, once they die, that's the end of it. Only Tiantong, in three deaths, could not finish. Now, with homesickness hard to hold back, I cannot help but join in mourning. First, I ask him: 'Wait for Sister Lingzhao to come and see what time of day it is?' Second, I ask: 'In what year did the Master already build his memorial pagoda?' Third, I ask: 'The Master calls for the fourth wife himself—he truly wants to have the old monk hand over his alms bowl and bag with both hands, without reservation.'"
