> Master Chunzhuo Wencai of Xiangyan, Nanyang <note place="inline">Disciple of Baoying Yu (Qing 26)</note>

> A monk asked, "What is the realm of principle (Li Dharmadhatu)?" The master said, "Void space falls to the ground, shattered beyond any pattern." "What is the realm of phenomena (Shi Dharmadhatu)?" The master said, "When you arrive home, all is swept clean—no longer a fool trapped in a house." "What is the realm where principle and phenomena are unobstructed?" The master said, "In deep winter, a withered tree blooms; in high summer, snowflakes fly." "What is the realm where all phenomena are unobstructed with each other?" The master said, "A gentle breeze keeps the bright moon company; an old rustic smiles in easy friendship."

> A saying goes: "The ancestral teaching and the doctrinal teaching have been as incompatible as ice and fire for three thousand years. Only Xiangyan knew how to take the tangled vines and use them as a walking staff. Even so, if one tries to interpret the Four Dharmadhātu through the ancestral teaching, they will inevitably be tripped up by the vines. If one tries to understand them through the doctrinal teaching, how can the walking staff's true command be carried out? If someone can distinguish between the two, then the walking staff is precisely the vines. Elder Xiong now adds another rope to these vines, wishing to continue the conversation with the ancients. 'What is the Dharmadhātu of Principle?'—The universe has not a single inch of earth; the great land does not meet a single person. 'What is the Dharmadhātu of Phenomena?'—Arriving at the river, the Wu lands end; across the shore, the Yue mountains multiply. 'What is the Dharmadhātu of Principle and Phenomena Unobstructed?'—The mysterious pearl clears the Red River; the divine sword leaps from the deep abyss. 'What is the Dharmadhātu of Phenomena and Phenomena Unobstructed?'—The woman sways the loom, creaking; the child plays with its mouth, babbling. Now tell me: beyond all this, is there still anything else? Om Lam Svaha."
