> Admonition to Attendant Yizi Mengfan

> The yellow-faced elder, moved by compassion and mercy, appeared in this world. The blue-eyed barbarian monk transmitted the dharma to guide the confused, journeying west from ten thousand miles away. Over five thousand scrolls—mere worn-out paper—exhaust the tender heart itself. One thousand seven hundred cases—nothing but tangled vines—pour out the very blood of inner truth. If you see them through the correct eye, it's like gouging a wound in healthy flesh, or dreaming of dreaming. That said, you can't just stop with this view. If you do, you'll fall into the trap of "no-affairs" and tumble into the deep pit of liberation itself. So let yourself, moment by moment, use the Buddha's dream-like deeds as a boat to sail the ocean of illusion. Don't cling to this shore, don't cling to the other shore, don't rest in the middle current. Carry all your weary dream-companions across. Only then will you realize: the Tathagata's so-called "liberation" means no beings are actually liberated—and this is the way of liberating. It's not forced. Yet this mountain monk has one more thing to say: if you want true and certain accord, take the great earth as your boat, lift a single blade of grass as your sail. There's no need to rig a mast of rabbit horn or tie a rope of turtle hair. Let favorable or adverse winds blow from east or west. Don't make it a dream, don't make it not a dream. From the ten-direction buddhas above to the tiniest wriggling beings below, nothing adds a hair of good or subtracts a hair of bad—all is completely contained within this. Now tell me: who is the one watching the wind and grasping the rudder? And where, in the end, will they find their resting place? Open your eyes and look.
