Summary of the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment

All virtuous roots arise from the teacher, Like a fertile field that yields joy and benefit. If we rely improperly, those roots are cut. Please grant your blessings to follow the wise teacher properly.

At all times and in all places, our guides, The true spiritual teachers, are like the Buddha. See only their good qualities, not their faults, And remember their great kindness—please grant your blessings.

With deep respect and faith as our mindset, Offer life, wealth, and practice as instructed. Make supreme offerings as our earnest effort, And seek only to please the teacher—please grant your blessings.

Free from the eight adversities and endowed with the ten fortunes, We can practice all paths: Mahayana, Vajrayana, Sutra, and Tantra. But fearing this body will be hard to get again, I aspire wholeheartedly—please grant your blessings.

The enemy of death is certain to arrive, Perhaps even today. At death, all worldly affairs must be left behind. Grant your blessings that I may swiftly practice the Dharma.

Countless bad deeds from beginningless time Will cause me to fall into lower realms without freedom. If I fall, I must endure cold, heat, and more. Reflecting on this unbearable suffering, please grant your blessings.

You who can dispel all fears and give refuge, Real, not false, and with no other refuge— I sincerely take refuge in the Three Jewels and keep their precepts, Both general and specific—please grant your blessings.

From wholesome and unwholesome deeds, pleasure and pain arise: We must accept their due, diligently stop bad and do good. Especially for the sins gathered since beginningless time, I apply the four opponent powers—please grant your blessings.

By diligently cultivating virtuous deeds in this life, I may gain a precious human or heavenly body. But these still cannot escape inherent suffering. Grant your blessings that I may wish to leave samsara.

Drifting in the ocean of existence without freedom, This cruel drama is caused by karma and afflictions. Karma in turn arises from disturbing emotions. Grant your blessings that I vow to destroy this enemy of delusion.

Under the influence of karma and defilements, we transmigrate, Bound tightly by a chain of continuous rebirth. Freedom from this brings the bliss beyond contamination. Grant your blessings that I strive earnestly for liberation.

To be free from the sufferings of existence, rely on the three trainings. The Buddha praised the virtue of a monastic life. Life after life, may I uphold the vows of liberation, Protecting them like my own eyes—please grant your blessings.

Though seeking mere personal liberation is achievable, It’s a pity that self-benefit remains incomplete! Grant your blessings that I may practice the path that fulfills both aims, Entering the Great Vehicle. Please grant your blessings.

(Based on the method for cultivating Bodhicitta as taught by Master Atisha)

Even in this present life, worldly conflicts appear, Yet each individual's fate is uncertain. Do not create false distinctions of love and hate; Diligently cultivate equanimity, and pray for blessings to do so.

The cycle of birth and death has no beginning; Entry into the womb and rebirth also have no origin. Thus know that all sentient beings have been our mothers; Aspire to this insight, and pray for blessings to attain it.

In this life, the mother who loves me is the most dear, Yet all mothers have nurtured me with equal care. Thinking of this deep kindness, which I have not yet repaid, Remember the mother's kindness, and pray for blessings to do so.

If I were to abandon one who has shown me such kindness, Who would be more lowly than myself? Therefore, to repay this debt, I must relieve their suffering, And grant them supreme bliss; pray for blessings to achieve this.

These kind mothers lack happiness. I offer my body, wealth, and virtuous roots to them. May all sentient beings attain joy, And be fully endowed with all that is good; pray for blessings to realize this.

All mother sentient beings are tormented by suffering. May they be completely free from the causes and results of pain. Even if the remaining misfortunes fall upon me, I will diligently cultivate compassion; pray for blessings to do so.

Toward all beings throughout the world, I should protect them from affliction and sever the root of suffering. I must resolve to do this decisively, And pray for the swift ability to do so; pray for blessings to achieve this.

Effortlessly, I must accomplish both my own good and that of others. Who else but the World-Honored One can do this? For the sake of benefiting all beings, May I quickly attain Buddhahood; pray for blessings to accomplish this.

The practice of cultivating Bodhicitta passed down by Master Shantideva.

Neither I nor others wish for suffering; We all desire happiness alike. Just as others seek joy like me, May I see all as equal and gain blessings.

Cherishing self is the root of all suffering; Cherishing others is the source of all virtue. The difference between ordinary beings and Buddhas comes from this— May I exchange self and others and gain blessings.

May I take upon myself all causes and effects of others' suffering, And give away all my virtuous causes and effects of happiness, Without exception, like the wind coming and going— May I develop this mind of exchange and gain blessings.

To keep this bodhicitta from ever fading, I will recall its benefits six times a day; Abandoning the four black dharmas and relying on the white, May I practice accordingly and gain blessings.

For the sake of others, I make vast vows; To swiftly fulfill these vows, I take the great precepts and embark on great practice— May I train with diligence and gain blessings.

My body, life, possessions, and virtues of past, present, and future, I offer to all beings according to their wishes; Through mental transformation, I practice giving— May my generosity expand and gain blessings.

The precepts of individual liberation and other trainings, I will never break even at the cost of my life; For even subtle faults, whether natural or avoidable, May I guard with shame and care, gaining blessings.

People, non-humans, and the four great elements Bring many harms and obstacles; I will cut off anger and not retaliate, Seeing it as karma, enduring with patience—may I gain blessings.

Having sought enlightenment for the benefit of others, Through countless hardships across oceans of eons, Without fear or fatigue in difficult practices, May I don the armor of diligence and gain blessings.

With strong mindfulness and alertness, I overcome dullness and restlessness; Focusing the mind on one object, I experience ease; Body and mind become capable of virtue— May I attain meditative stability at will and gain blessings.

With discerning wisdom, I contemplate the nature of reality; Through the power of insight, ease arises; From that ease, deep realization unfolds— May I give rise to this wisdom and gain blessings.

Through giving, I gather beings as my community; Teaching Dharma in accord, showing beneficial conduct; Leading by example in common practice— May I benefit others through the four means and gain blessings.

Having completed the common path, I am a suitable vessel; I seek a qualified spiritual master; To enter the supreme secret vehicle, I receive the four initiations—may I gain blessings.

The secret mantra precepts I have received, If well guarded, lead to swift attainment; If not guarded, I will certainly fall to hell— May I cherish them even at the cost of my life and gain blessings.

The heart of the secret teachings, the two stages, Once I grasp their essence, I strive with vigor; Practicing in four sessions daily without interruption, Following the master's instructions—may I gain blessings.

May the virtuous teachers who reveal this wondrous path, And fellow practitioners who diligently cultivate, Together uphold the Dharma and keep it flourishing— May all inner and outer obstacles be pacified, and blessings come.

May I meet wise teachers in every life, Feasting on the nectar of the sublime Dharma; Completing the five paths and ten stages, May I swiftly realize the state of Vajradhara.
