> Dharma Talk on New Year's Eve

> Nanshan picked up the cat—before the knife, who could save it? Dongshan set down the fruit basket—beneath the words, who could turn around? Zihu caught the thieving monk—how could he not take responsibility? Dasui followed the fire of eons away—straight down, no one knows the way back. Here, each one has a phrase of escape, but I tell you, dividing the year with you still leaves much to be done. Dongshan said, "The three evil paths and hell are not the real suffering; not understanding this matter under the monk's robe is the real suffering." Brothers! The moment you knit your brows, you've already fallen into a pit or a chasm. In daily life, hurriedly arranging hands and feet—like a lion roaming, roaring, and leaping back, tigers, wolves, and jackals hear it and lose their bowels and wits. Who dares to stand before it and be an enemy? But if for a moment you lose mindfulness and a thieving thought flickers up, you'll be thrown to the bottom of the soft, vast ocean, struggling to survive without strength. Later, don't blame me for not spelling it out for you.

> In the ninth month of the year Yihai, Magistrate Liu of Macheng, Grand Secretary Li, Vice Censor Mei, Minister of War Zhou, Minister of Justice Chen, Mei Huilian, and Li Gongji invited \[the master\] to the Baofa Temple to open the Dharma hall.

> The Master said: "This stick of incense is naturally noble and exalted, towering beyond praise, vast beyond description. I offer it to wish His Majesty the Emperor a sacred life of ten thousand years. May his reign establish perfect harmony and balance, and may his rule shine with the light of sun and moon. To all the great protectors of the Dharma—officials, lay leaders, and devoted householders who personally support this Dharma seat and jointly revive the lineage's tradition—I wish that you may appear in countless forms in life after life, and adorn true Buddha lands in world after world. This second stick of incense—undiminished in the past, unforgotten today—is radiant, wondrous, and profound. I raise it before gods and humans as an offering to the founding patriarch of the revived Caodong lineage, the great Master Shouchang of Jiangxi, to honor the transmission of our tradition's essence. This third stick, sharing the same root and flowering through interconnected branches, I offer to my root teachers: the great Master Boshan of Xinzhou and the great Master Dongyuan of Jianzhou, to repay their kindness in guiding me through realization and awakening, nourishing me with the Dharma's milk. May everyone here together hold this in reverence and respect." The hall master struck the gavel and announced: "All you dragon-elephants at this Dharma feast, you should contemplate the ultimate truth." The Master remained silent for a while, then said: "Do you see it? In the great mirror of the sky, all things reflect themselves. If you wait for raised eyebrows or blinking eyes, that is already like adding gold to gold or whitening jade. Even so, today I ascend this precious lotus throne—is there still something to be fully raised beyond this? Is there anyone among you who has caught this first sound? Now is the time to respond before the assembly, so as not to waste this inherent opportunity. Is there anyone? Is there anyone?" The assembly remained silent. The Master then raised his ritual staff and said: "Wonderful, wonderful! Pointing to the sky and earth, I was once a messenger of the teachings; facing the wall and calming the mind, am I not a lamp spread from the flame? Today I come forth into the world—how shall I express this one phrase?" He then drew a circle and said: "Do you understand? Above everyone's head there is a golden wheel; through ten thousand ages, the light of ancient silence illuminates this sacred age. Take care!" He struck the gavel again and announced: "Contemplate deeply the Dharma King's Dharma—the Dharma King's Dharma is thus." Then he descended from the seat.
