### 頌古

> Praising the Ancients

舉：「川禪師有江陵僧來參，川問：『幾時發足？』江陵僧提起坐具。川云：『謝子遠來。下去！』僧遶禪床一匝便出。川云：『若不恁麼，爭知眼目端的？』僧撫掌云：『苦殺人！洎合錯判諸方。』川云：『深得禪宗道理。』」

> A monk from Jiangling came to visit Zen Master Chuan. The master asked, "When did you set out on your journey?" The monk lifted his sitting mat in response. Master Chuan said, "Thank you for coming from afar. You may go." The monk circled once around the meditation seat and then left. Master Chuan remarked, "If not for this, how could one truly discern the clarity of insight?" The monk clapped his hands and said, "How utterly vexing! I nearly misjudged all the other masters." Master Chuan replied, "You have deeply grasped the principle of Zen."

師頌云：

> The Master's Verse says:

日面月面難逃勘辨，南斗北斗也須著首。何如海闊與天遙？無絃琴上知音有？

> The sun's face, the moon's face—hard to escape scrutiny; The Southern Dipper, the Northern Dipper—they too must bow their heads. How can it compare to the vastness of the sea and the distance of the sky? On the stringless lute, is there one who truly understands the tune?

舉：「僧問本覺禪師：『如何是道？』覺豎起拳云：『會麼？』僧云：『不會。』覺云：『拳頭也不識。』」

> A monk asked Master Benjue, "What is the Way?" Benjue raised his fist and said, "Do you understand?" The monk replied, "I don't." Benjue said, "You don't even recognize a fist."

師頌云：

> The Master's Verse says:

連頭帶尾一百八，諸佛出來也難話。你若還我草鞋錢，我即酬你廬陵價。

> From head to tail, one hundred and eight, even the Buddhas would find it hard to speak. If you return my straw sandal money, I will pay you the price of Luling.
