評古
Ancient Commentary
舉:「一僧辭常觀禪師,觀云:『汝諸方去,莫謗老僧在這裡。』僧云:『某甲不道和尚在這裡。』觀云:『汝道老僧在甚麼處?』僧豎一指,觀云:『早是謗了也。』」
A monk was taking leave of Zen Master Changguan. Guanchang said, "Wherever you go, don't slander me by saying I'm here."
The monk replied, "I won't say the master is here."
Guanchang asked, "Then where will you say I am?"
The monk raised one finger.
Guanchang said, "You've already slandered me."
師評云:「一箇掩耳偷鈴,一箇指鹿為馬,正眼看來,二俱失利。」
The teacher remarked, "One covers his ears to steal a bell; another points at a deer and calls it a horse. In the clear light of truth, both have missed the mark."
