> To Fuling Magistrate Kong Zhaowen

> Riding the wind and stirring water, venturing north and charting south—this is the way of worldly affairs. To fully realize one's nature and establish one's destiny, to transcend Buddhas and patriarchs—this is the true purpose of leaving the world. Good sir, do you seek the fish or the bear's paw? Literary pursuits and worldly achievements are truly like clouds in Confucius's eyes; love and attachment to family and fields are like the willow that grows from one's elbow. Since you have already awakened to past mistakes, why not embrace the present truth? The phrase "seeing through" is not merely idle words from a mountain recluse. Our meeting at Fuling was indeed a rare karmic connection; your letters arrive frequently, as if we were face to face. Though mountains and rivers can enhance a smile, when bodies are separated, hearts cannot truly converse. Even if I were to cite the teachings of ancient masters, I fear they might be misunderstood. Once, Guishan asked Yangshan: "If someone suddenly asks, 'All sentient beings are lost in the vast sea of karma, with no foundation to rely upon,' how would you verify this?" Yangshan replied: "If a monk came, I would call out, 'So-and-so.' When the monk turned around, I would say, 'What is this?' As he hesitated, I would tell him, 'Not only are you lost in the vast sea of karma, but you also have no foundation to rely upon.'" Later, a venerable master praised this with a verse: "When called once, do you turn and recognize me? Vaguely, the moon among vines becomes a hook again. A child of noble birth who has just fallen low— On the vast, desolate road, how much sorrow lingers!" Do you see this?
