> Reply to Monk Xiang Dan Gong<note place="inline">i.e., Ma Jiazhi</note>

> In the past, there were those who met face to face yet did not truly know each other, while others separated by a thousand miles shared the same wind. Consider the master Ciming, known as the Lion of the West River, who was skilled at biting and killing people—meaning he could cut through delusion with relentless clarity. He deliberately met with Yang Danian and Li Wenhe, both of whom had attained a steady and solid realization of the Way. Their exchange was like striking a poisonous drum—each word struck home, and the echo of that encounter has never ceased to resound. Previously, at the gathering by Yuanyang Lake, I spoke with Master Lingyan, Master Bo'an, and others about the state of Buddhism in recent times. Too much of it is mere decoration. Even when there are impressive displays of wit and sharp exchanges, they have nothing to do with the essential matters of birth and death, of life and the nature of mind. It is like the true Daoist priest who draws a talisman—with a few casual strokes, he can summon thunder and command spirits. But a fake priest, even if he exhausts himself with incantations and burning talismanic paper, only makes the wild ghosts laugh at him. What urgent matter can he possibly resolve? At that time, we already recognized you as a man of true substance, with the spirit to judge matters directly at the point of action. Last autumn, I read your writings on "Vegetable Roots" at Ruhang's place. The flavor was indeed free and unfettered, and I was delighted to compose a response to it. I did not expect that someone of your insight would not be annoyed by my rambling words, and would even meet with me on another peak, setting a time for our encounter. It seems that this tradition still holds the secret of "an immortal without a wife, a jade maiden without a husband"—a mystery beyond ordinary attachment. What fortune this is!
