### 馬伏波

> General Ma Yuan

竹開嘗舉：「馬伏波戒兄子不得言人過失，然書中述杜季良之行，非過乎？其後季良仇人據援書以訟季良，梁松因救季良不得，遂恨援而搆之禍，則援亦有以取之，不獨受松之拜也。」杖人曰：「雖然，果能瘖乎？或責援以老不知休，則彼受之耳。在毒霧中，自念少游語：『乘下澤車，何可得也？據鞍矍鑠，未免見長。』」

> Zhu Kai once remarked: "General Ma Yuan (also known as Ma Fubo) cautioned his nephew not to speak of others' faults, yet in his letters, he described the conduct of Du Jiliang—was that not a fault? Later, when an enemy of Du Jiliang seized upon Ma Yuan's letter to accuse him, Liang Song, unable to defend Du Jiliang, bore a grudge against Ma Yuan and plotted his downfall. So Ma Yuan brought some of this upon himself—it wasn't merely because he received Liang Song's salutation." The Old Master with the Staff said: "Even so, could he have remained silent? Some might fault Ma Yuan for not knowing when to retire in old age, and he would have accepted that. Amidst the poisonous mists, he recalled his younger days, thinking: 'Riding a humble carriage—how could that be achieved now? Strapping on the saddle with vigor, he could not help but show his mettle.'"
