> Rén Huá Jūshì

> The manifested body shows illness, which I have heard of for some time. Yet, since the wondrous virtue has not yet emerged from the Iron Ring Mountain, there is no one at hand to send. Only one person has worn through his straw sandals but cannot find the door to enter. Though one might gain a path through the attendant, when asked about the source of the illness, one cannot fully express it in words. This causes my lay patron's eloquence and spiritual power to be heard but unheeded. In the previous reply, the string was too taut and the tone too urgent, so I could not fully convey my thoughts. Your recent letter speaks of a sincere heart, piece by piece—how could I ever repay even a fraction of your kindness? Though the collection of Foolish Hollow contains wondrous sounds, without wondrous fingers, they cannot be played. Moreover, with ten fingers like clubs, how could I not set them aside on a high shelf? My strength falls short of my will, and I have failed your kind intention. I read the "Ten Self-Chants" at that time and returned them to the abbot's quarters. As for meeting Mr. Liu, that would be acceptable, but as for me, it is not possible. I respectfully reply.
