### 住弁山復丁文學子敬

> Dwelling at Bianshan, Reply to Ding Wenxue <note place="inline">Zijing</note>

適承佳貺，謝謝。來翰云：身心總非，無乃落空。此因世人執身心實有，故吾佛破之，令知身心空花，當下即歸真際，豈復落于空哉？又來云：山河大地咸屬玅心中之物，混沌未剖，向何處安身立命？此處正要。居士疑著，病朽聊通一線云：無舌童兒解唱歌。又來云：寂寂惺惺時，卻似無極涵太極。寂寂惺惺，此乃永嘉惺寂雙流、體用一如之義，總不出自心。若達自心，無極太極亦在其中矣。柏樹子話，乃祖師向上提持，不落有無及非有非無四句。須離四句百非外會取始得。如不會，但秪恁麼參去，自有到家時節也。

> Thank you for your kind letter. You wrote: "Body and mind are both unreal—doesn't this lead to falling into emptiness?" This is because ordinary people cling to body and mind as truly existing, so the Buddha refuted this, teaching us to see that body and mind are like flowers in empty space—illusions that return to true reality the moment we recognize them. How could this possibly lead to falling into emptiness? You also wrote: "Mountains, rivers, and the great earth all belong to the wondrous mind. Before chaos was divided, where does one find a place to stand?" This is precisely the point. Since you harbor doubts, this old, ailing monk will offer a thread of guidance: "A tongueless child knows how to sing." You also wrote: "In the state of calm stillness and clear awareness, it seems like the infinite containing the supreme ultimate." Calm stillness and clear awareness—this is Yongjia's teaching of the simultaneous flow of stillness and clarity, the unity of essence and function. All of this never leaves the self-mind. If you penetrate the self-mind, then the infinite and the supreme ultimate are all contained within it. As for the saying "The cypress tree in the courtyard"—this is the patriarchs' direct pointing, which transcends the four propositions of existence, non-existence, both, and neither. You must grasp it apart from all verbal formulations and conceptual extremes. If you cannot yet understand, simply keep investigating in this way, and in time you will naturally arrive home.
