### 宣宗諱忱，憲宗第十三子

> Emperor Xuanzong<note place="inline">Named Chen, the 13th son of Emperor Xianzong</note>

《舊唐史》

大中五年正月，詔弘辯禪師入內。帝曰：「禪師既會祖意，還禮佛看經否？」對曰：「沙門禮佛誦經，蓋是住持常法，有四種焉：依佛戒修身，參尋知識，漸修梵行，履踐如來所行之跡。」帝曰：「何為頓見？何為漸修？」對曰：「頓明自性，與佛無二。然有無始染習，故假漸修對治，令順性起用。如人喫飯，非一口便飽云云。」是日便對漏下七刻。帝悅，賜號圓智禪師。繼有詔旨，增修天下祖塔。應未經賜諡者，所在以聞，太常考行頒賜。師嗣馬祖。

> In the first month of the fifth year of the Dazhong era, the Emperor summoned Chan Master Hongbian to the palace. The Emperor asked, "Since you have realized the ancestral intention, do you still bow to the Buddha and recite sutras?" The Master replied, "A monk bowing to the Buddha and reciting sutras is part of the daily practice. There are four aspects: observing the precepts to cultivate the body, seeking out wise teachers, gradually cultivating pure conduct, and following the path that the Tathagata walked." The Emperor asked, "What is sudden enlightenment? What is gradual cultivation?" The Master replied, "Sudden enlightenment means realizing that one's inherent nature is no different from the Buddha's. However, since we have been tainted by habitual tendencies since beginningless time, we rely on gradual cultivation to remedy these, allowing our nature to function in accordance with its true state. It is like eating a meal: one mouthful alone does not make you full." That day, the conversation lasted until the seventh water-mark of the evening. The Emperor was delighted and bestowed upon the Master the title "Chan Master of Perfect Wisdom." Subsequently, an imperial decree was issued to restore and expand the ancestral pagodas throughout the country. Any pagodas that had not yet received an imperial title were to be reported to the court, where the Ministry of Rites would assess the master's conduct and grant an appropriate title. This Master was a Dharma successor of Mazu.
