> Self-Reflection on the Fifteenth Day of the Seventh Month: A Teaching for the Assembly

> "Today is the Day of Buddha's Joy. Why is it called Buddha's Joy? It is because the Buddha rejoices in two things: First, the Sangha engages in self-reflection, allowing others to point out faults in what they have seen, heard, or suspected. If there are faults, they repent according to the Dharma, and so the Buddha rejoices. Second, during the three-month retreat, they diligently practice the Way, some attaining the Four Fruits, the Three Virtuous Stages, or the Ten Grounds, or enhancing their learning in precepts, meditation, and wisdom. Thus, the Buddha rejoices. Looking at ourselves today, the Buddha will surely not rejoice for us but will instead frown. Why is this? Those who have faults do not confess and repent to eliminate their transgressions. Even if others see, hear, or suspect something, they fear anger and dare not point it out. This is not in keeping with the true meaning of self-reflection, and so the Buddha frowns. Today, we have not attained any of the Four Fruits, nor have we realized any of the Three Virtuous Stages or Ten Holy Grounds. We have made no progress in the Threefold Training of precepts, meditation, and wisdom. We should feel deeply ashamed. What does it mean to have made no progress in the Threefold Training? Precepts are meant to counteract afflictions and delusions. Though afflictions are many, they can be broadly divided into two types: fundamental and latent. Now, let us examine ourselves: What precepts have we upheld to eliminate which afflictions? If we cannot find any, then we are ignorant of the precepts—how can we claim progress? Meditation refers to the four dhyanas, the eight concentrations, and the various samadhi gates. Now, let us reflect: What samadhi or meditative state have we attained? If we have attained none, then wisdom has no foundation. Wisdom is meant to destroy delusions. I ask you: Which delusions have you destroyed to attain the wisdom of emptiness of self? Which delusions have you destroyed to attain the wisdom of emptiness of phenomena? If not, we have merely wasted our time. If we rely on mistaken views and deluded understanding, claiming that everything is already perfect and there is nothing to cultivate or attain, then we are on the brink of falling. In this way, we have no share in the Threefold Training and no entry into the holy path. We betray our own spiritual potential—should we not feel fear?"
