> Preface

昔達磨初祖佩西天識記航海東來，梁武以天子之尊而不契廓然之旨，經論精通如流支三藏輩亦皆溟涬其說，獨總持者以尼部綱領破禪學洪荒，儼然與斷臂立雪之可師雁行終古，苟非法身大士乘宿願力示隨類形，安能使拘拘質陋而昧本來者信有不立階差、一念頓證之玅道乎？故知斯事不可以高貴辨博，輒自誇詡無門之門，除是過量英雄乃能插足。若夫庸愚羸劣之夫，未許窺其戶庭而造其堂奧也。惟我靈瑞符大師賦性英特、發語逸群，既從靈嵒印下翻身，便向臨濟棒頭吐氣，孤行秀水眾楚皆喑，獨步東山千峰下拜，為之後者相繼誠難，方彼前賢實亦無媿，而大師善藏其用，退席閒居，嚴冷風規足莊僧史。今讀嵒華諸集，其玅句珠圓、雄機劍拔，走盤而盤局全輝、揮空而空輪絕跡，置之末山、無著諸師語中，俾具擇法眼者窮歲研精卒莫能辨。噫！說法垂機至此極矣，展卷掩卷一如毒鼓而盡喪偷心，然播其聲教于天下後世者，我不知其凡幾，即以此名無盡燈可也。

> Long ago, the founding Patriarch Bodhidharma, bearing the seal of the Western Heaven, sailed eastward to China. Emperor Wu of Liang, despite his imperial dignity, failed to grasp the profound truth of "vast and empty." Even great scriptural masters like the Tripitaka Master Bodhiruci were utterly confounded by his teachings. Alone among them, the one who upheld the patriarchal lineage—the nun who grasped the essential framework of the faith—broke open the untamed wilderness of Chan practice. She stood as an equal alongside the Master who cut off his arm in the snow at Shaolin, leaving a legacy that rivals his through the ages. If she were not a great bodhisattva manifesting in appropriate form, empowered by vows from countless past lives, how could she have enabled those shackled by narrow views and darkened by ignorance to believe that there exists a wondrous path beyond all stages, awakening in a single thought? Thus we know that this matter cannot be grasped through noble birth, eloquent argument, or vast learning. Those who boast of the gateless gate will find no entry—only heroes of extraordinary capacity can step through. As for the ordinary, feeble, and weak, they cannot even peer through the door, let alone penetrate the inner sanctum. Now, our great master Lingrui Fu was endowed with a brilliant nature and spoke with extraordinary eloquence. Having turned himself around under Master Lingyan's seal, he expelled his breath at the very staff of the Linji lineage. Walking alone in Xiushui, all the voices of Chu fell silent; standing solitary on Dongshan, a thousand peaks bowed in reverence. Those who came after him found it truly difficult to match his standard, yet when placed beside the ancients, he indeed had no cause for shame. The master was skilled at concealing his brilliance, retreating from the limelight to dwell in quiet repose—his stern and forbidding manner was worthy of the monastic chronicles. Now when we read his collected works such as \*Yanhua\*, we find his wondrous phrases perfectly rounded like pearls and his majestic workings sharp as a drawn sword. When cast upon the board, the whole board shines; when swung through the air, even the wheel of emptiness leaves no trace. Place these words beside those of the ancient teachers Moshan and Wuzhuo, and let one endowed with the eye of Dharma-selection study them for a year with the utmost refinement—he could never tell them apart. Ah! The teaching of Dharma through living words has reached its ultimate expression here. Opening and closing the scroll is like striking a poison drum that kills all thieving minds. As for spreading this voice of awakening throughout the world and to later generations—I cannot count how many will be transformed. This alone may rightly be called the Lantern of Endless Light.
