The World Honored One addressed the monks: "Like a man crossing a swift river, he carries a torch of flame. Though the fire and water are in conflict, the man's intent is to cross. Thus, when the wise hear the Dharma, they firmly grasp it and do not forget."

The Buddha said: "Good monks, like a man who owns a hundred jars of oil, yet only lights one lamp—though the oil is abundant, the lamp is one. So too, of the countless sentient beings, only a few awaken to the truth."

The World Honored One said: "Monks, do not fear good roots. For good roots cause no harm. They bring only happiness. Worry instead about evil roots—they bring suffering. They obstruct the path."
