> Master Dahui Zonggao's Portrait Eulogy

烹佛烹祖大爐鞴，煉聖煉凡惡鉗鎚。起曹洞於欲墜之際，鍼膏肓於必死之時。善說法要，罔涉離微。不起於座，而變荊棘林為梵釋龍天之宮，而無作無為。神澄定靈，雪頂龐眉。良工寫出兮不許僧繇知；虛堂挂張兮梁寶公猶迷。箇是天童老古錐，妙喜知音更有誰？

> A great furnace that burns even Buddhas and Patriarchs, A fierce tongs that refines sages and ordinary beings alike. He revived the Caodong school when it was on the verge of collapse, He stitched up its vital wounds when it was at death's door. He perfectly taught the essentials of the Dharma, Never straying into the subtle extremes of being or non-being. Without rising from his seat, he transformed a thicket of thorns into the palace of Brahma, All without deliberate effort or action. His spirit is clear and settled, his awareness calm and bright, With a snow-covered crown and thick, flowing brows. A fine craftsman painted his portrait—yet even the master painter Sengyou couldn’t discern it; Hung in the empty hall, even the beam-master Baogong would mistake it. This is the old Awl of Tiantong. Beyond Miaoxi, who else could truly know him?
