> Here many of us—monks who shared the same views and friendship—entered the rainy season retreat together in a residence in the land of Kosala. At that time, we thought: "What approach could we take so that we might dwell in harmony, joy, without conflict, and peacefully throughout the retreat, without being troubled by the search for alms?" Then we thought: "If we do this—if we refrain from conversation and from exchanging greetings—then we will dwell in harmony, joy, without conflict, and peacefully, without the burden of alms-seeking." And so, we did not speak together, nor did we greet one another. Those who returned first from the village with alms set out seats and prepared water for washing feet, all without a word. In this way, we dwelt in harmony, joy, without conflict, and peacefully throughout the retreat, untroubled by the need for alms.
