> Discourse at Wanshou Temple in Wujiang

> The master, in the eighth year of the Kangxi reign, received an invitation at Ruru Nunnery in Xiushui and entered the monastery on the twenty-first day of the second month.

> The mountain gate. The master said, "The great vow's gate is open, but the clamor and stillness differ vastly. In the human realm, the ten directions and all beings—only through this path do they enter. Yet what of the one without rank who comes and goes through the face's gate?" He drew a line with his staff and said, "The iron ox is whipped to roam the fragrant grass, treading through spring's light, yet nothing remains exposed." Then he entered.

> Weituo. The Master said: "Pure and true, with the all-seeing eye, yet not freely bestowed in the Jetavana garden; acting in accord with the time and season, the True Dharma relies on this for its support. Through divine transformations across the three regions, you serve as a ferry to salvation, and Longxing Wanshou flourishes eternally without end." Then he inserted the incense.

> In the Buddha hall, he said: "The great perfect mirror wisdom is the appearance of a great being. The countless lands are contained within a single hair's tip. It is not that the sounds arise from some special cause; in heaven and on earth, it is called uniquely honored. If this is so, then within the entire great thousand worlds there is nowhere to escape. Today, meeting face to face, one can only bow in homage three times."

> Entering the hall, he said: “When the iron-faced vajra arrives, the sixty black vines turn and flip; when the handsome monk takes a bite, three heavy blows from the wormwood branch strike him. Such pure iron skulls are all transformed, drifting with the waves and following the current, acting freely.” Then he rose.

> On that day, the gentry, devotees, and the entire congregation of the monastery gathered to request the Master to ascend the hall. The Master received the petition and said, "The radiant paper unfolds in splendor, the clear waters echo with melody, the elegant script opens wide, and Songling finds its place. The discourse flows like a poured pitcher, the tongue stirs up rolling waves, the brush formation scatters like clouds, and the tip whirls with brilliant light. Wishing to hear the distant voice, I ask that it be proclaimed once more." After the proclamation was read, he pointed to the Dharma seat and said, "Eighty-four thousand lion thrones, one sound roaring across all realms; ten billion Mount Sumeru bodies of Vairocana, all sharing this day's lamp of transmission." He picked up the staff and struck it once, saying, "Turning the wheel of the Tathagata's true Dharma, treading alone the azure sky, beyond all grasping and gazing." Then he ascended the seat. He lit incense and said, "This first stick of incense: may the emperor's four seas be renewed in virtue, may the eight reaches be transformed by the sun's influence. We reverently honor the sagely virtue that is impartial, and may the imperial map be eternally secure." Again he lit incense and said, "The image divides the two principles, the ranks are set among the three powers. We humbly honor the civil and military officials, the current governors, inspectors, commanders, deputies, county magistrates, garrison generals, and all such positions—may they, by their vow-power, aid the nation and nurture the state, assisting the Buddha's voice and repaying kindness and grace." Again he lit incense and said, "Master within the dust, body free beyond things. We vow that the gentry, scholars, and all who have invited me in this district, monastic and lay alike, be clear and distinct, awakening wisdom without a teacher." Again he lit incense and said, "This stick of incense: rain and wind cannot soak it, water and fire cannot reach it. Now I offer it for the fifth time, presented to the late Venerable Master Wanru of Yumen Hall, to repay the kindness of Dharma-milk." He gathered his robes and took his seat. The chief monk struck the gavel and said, "All you dragon-elephant assembly of the Dharma feast, you should contemplate the foremost meaning." A monk asked, "When patrons and protectors gather at the feast with non-dual minds, and water and clouds come and go with added joy, Master, as you ascend the lion seat, what tune will you conduct?" The Master said, "The spring day adds brilliance." The monk continued, "But when a single melody holds a thousand ages of meaning, and ten thousand years give birth to a new branch of spring—what then?" The Master said, "At the Rainbow Bridge pavilion, the water flows east." The monk continued, "Wearing a bamboo hat, the moon rises beyond a thousand peaks—who fishes the river breeze for one dot of red?" The Master struck him. The monk shouted. The Master said, "Spare me the roaring." The monk continued, "The one who knows the tune is still here." The Master struck him and said, "Do not put up a false show of force." Another monk asked, "Without storing a single grain of rice, one receives the ten directions' travelers. I ask the Master: since you do not store a single grain, what will you use to receive the sages of the ten directions?" The Master said, "Let you be fully satisfied in your practice." The monk tried to speak further, and the Master said, "You are choked." The monk said, "Then all conditions are dropped at once; thirsty, drink; hungry, eat—no need to plow." The Master said, "You have not yet gained the right opportunity." The monk said, "Offering this body and mind to the dust-motes of lands—this is called repaying the Buddha's kindness." The Master said, "How would you repay that kindness?" The monk shouted. The Master struck him. The monk bowed and withdrew. The Master then said, "The Buddha spoke the Dharma with a single voice, yet in forty-nine years never uttered half a word. Bodhidharma transmitted the Buddha-mind seal, came before the hall of King Liang, and simply said, 'I do not know'—indeed, a moment of dullness. Good people, do you understand? This is the sentence that Shakyamuni and Patriarch Bodhidharma could not settle between them, yet today Wanshou has seen through it completely. Now tell me: when all the city's protectors of the Dharma summon this mountain monk to ascend this seat, how shall we speak of it?" After a long pause, he said, "Holding hands you cannot make someone walk; only when one is willing on their own does it become intimate." He struck the staff and descended from the seat.
