> Shurangama Sutra Transmission of the Mandate

> Someone asked, "What is fate?" — Breath, consciousness, and warmth: These three arise in order, but only consciousness is the first mover. When consciousness stirs, mental formations arise. With the completion of breath, warmth spreads through it, and thus the four elements are complete. Thus the twelve links of dependent origination, like a chain of hooks, create the three times. Eons flow like the sands of the Ganges; even if the sands run out, the eons remain. So why do sentient beings remain lost for so long, unable to awaken? This teaching is not unique to Buddhism alone — the three paths share the same root. In Confucianism, it's called "knowing fate." In Daoism, it's called "returning to fate." In Buddhism, it's called "transmitting fate," and nothing is more intimate than this. I only hope that all practitioners, knowing fate, seek to return to it. Once returned, one's fate is no longer transmitted, and we return to that which is without sound or scent. The mind of perfect and complete awakening — such is the nature of nirvana.
