> Chapter 17: Arrival at Sariputra Island

> The great elder, foremost of sages, having completed the rains retreat, performed the Pavarana ceremony on the full-moon day of the month of Kartika, and addressed the king: (1) "O king of men! Our Master, the Blessed One, we have long not been able to pay homage to the Fully Enlightened One. We have come here without refuge, and here we have no one worthy of our reverence." (2) "Venerable sir! Did you not tell me that the Blessed One had already entered Parinirvana?" The king replied: "I revere the relics; I revere the Victor." (3) "I understand that it is your wish, venerable sir, that I should build a stupa. I will build one; please attend to the relics, venerable sir." (4) The elder said to the king: "You may consult with Sumana." The king asked: "Where can the relics be obtained from that novice?" (5) Then that novice Sumana, with joy, said to the king: "O king of men! Adorn the city and the roads, observe the Uposatha precepts together with the people, mount the royal elephant, (6) holding a white parasol, accompanied by musicians, and go to the great Naga king's park in the evening. (7) There, O king, you will know where the relics are distributed, and you will obtain the relics of the Buddha." (8)

> Then the elder went from the royal palace to Chetiya Mountain and spoke to the novice Sumana, who had attained a state of pure heart: "Wise Sumana, come. Go to the splendid city of Pataliputra, and deliver our words to your grandfather, the great king: 'Great King! Your friend, King Devanampiya, has gained faith in the Buddha's teaching and wishes to build a stupa. He asks for the relics of the Muni and the bowl used by the Teacher. For you have many bodily relics there.' Take that bowl filled with relics and go to the celestial palace of Sakka, lord of gods, and deliver our words to him: 'The right tooth relic of the Buddha, worthy of offerings from the three realms, is with you, lord of gods. So too is the right collarbone. Keep the tooth relic for your own veneration, but please give us the Teacher's collarbone. Lord of gods, do not neglect the matter of Lanka Island.'" "Very well, venerable sir," said the novice, who, with his psychic powers, in that very moment appeared before King Asoka, the righteous ruler. There, beneath the king's sal tree, he beheld the beautiful great Bodhi tree and witnessed the offerings prepared for the Kattika festival. Having heard the elder's words, the novice took the bowl filled with the relics the king had obtained and journeyed to the Himalayas. He placed the relics and the precious bowl on the mountain and went before the lord of gods to convey the elder's message. Then Sakka, king of gods, took the right collarbone from the Culamani Cetiya and gave it to the novice. Thereafter, the ascetic Sumana, carrying the relic and the relic-bowl, returned to Chetiya Mountain and personally handed them to the elder.

> The elephant carried the relics to the shrine at night and, during the day, bore them to the Bodhi tree, placing them within the hall. (40) The great king, following the elder's counsel, had a stupa built knee-high on that site over several days. (41) People came from all directions to pay homage to the relics enshrined there. (42) As the crowd gathered, the relics rose from the elephant's back into the air and remained suspended at the height of seven palm trees. (43) The relics moved the assembly with wonder, performing two miraculous feats beneath the knotted mango tree, just as the Buddha had done: flames issued forth, and water flowed, illuminating the land of Lanka with a single radiant hue. (44, 45)

> The victorious one, endowed with the fivefold eye, lying on the bed of final Nirvana, made five great determinations. (46) "Let King Ashoka take the southern branch of the great Bodhi tree! Let him cut it off and place it in a vase, (47) and that branch, once planted, shall shine in all directions, emitting six beautiful rays of light from its fruits and leaves. (48-49) That branch shall rise together with the lovely golden vase and vanish from sight, resting for seven days in the womb of the clouds, to be installed in the garden of the shrine. Let my right collarbone rise into the sky, performing two kinds of miracles, (50) and be placed in the glorious Hemamalika shrine on the island of Lanka. I have relics beyond measure, (51) and bearing the marks of the Buddha, let them rise and stand in the sky, performing two kinds of miracles and then rest." (52) Thus the Tathagata made five determinations. Therefore, at that time, the relics performed their miraculous feats. (53) Descending from the sky, those relics rested upon the king's head, and the king, overjoyed, enshrined them in a sacred shrine. (54) At the moment of enshrining those relics in the shrine, a wonderful and awe-inspiring great earthquake occurred. (55) Such are the Buddhas—marvelous! Such are the teachings of the Buddhas—marvelous! And the fruits of faith in the wonderful are likewise marvelous. (56)
