### 與汝允肅總戎

> For You, Commander Yun Su

別後瞬息四月矣，光陰逼人若是，竊惟今時不為功名祿位所絆、知進退者，能有幾人？唯足下抽身於金紫叢中，撒手於麒麟閣外，可謂名成身退，古來明哲何以過是？山野前見足下國事紛紜，頗似忘情吾道，邇來知有精進心，故以本分事相告。欲明此事，慎勿外求，只將一箇本來面目話頭孜孜矻矻，頓在目前，不可須臾放過，正如疇昔統領百萬雄兵援抱對壘，必以勝敵為主，稍有一毫畏縮，則為敗將矣。誠能勇猛無懈，於不知不覺處豁然，㘞地一聲，徹見自家本來面目，始知不動干戈而恒沙國土一時歸降，所云克己復禮、天下歸仁是也。勉旃！

> Four months have passed in the blink of an eye since we last met—time presses on us so relentlessly. These days, how many people can truly step back from the lure of rank and wealth, knowing when to advance and when to retreat? Only you, my friend, have pulled yourself away from the world of official honor, letting go of fame and status. You have achieved what the wise of old valued most: completing your work and retiring gracefully. How could even the clearest-minded sages of antiquity surpass you in this? Earlier, when I saw you immersed in the complexities of state affairs, I feared you had set aside our shared path. But recently I have learned that you are now devoted to spiritual progress, and so I write to share with you this essential matter. To truly understand it, be careful not to seek it outside yourself. Simply take up the question of your original nature—your true self—and hold it before you with constant, unremitting effort, never letting it slip from your mind even for a moment. Think of how you once led hundreds of thousands of troops, charging into battle with a clear aim: to defeat the enemy. If you waver even slightly, you become a losing general. Likewise, if you press forward with fearless diligence, then in a moment beyond thought and grasp, it will burst open—with a sudden \*ha!\*—and you will see clearly your own original face. Then you will realize that without moving a single weapon, countless worlds surrender to you at once. This is what the ancients meant by "overcoming the self and returning to ritual—the whole world returns to benevolence." Press on!
