### 茶話

> Tea Conversation

除歲，云：「歲去換愁年，春來物色鮮；山花夾綠水，巖樹舞青煙。個個不可惱，大家須喜歡。喜歡則不無，茶果價且止，倘有人問汝等要飯錢時又作麼生？」遂云：「歸堂去。」

> As the old year passes, he said: "The year departs, sorrow is exchanged for a new one; Spring arrives, all things appear fresh and bright. Mountain flowers flank the green waters, Cliffside trees dance in the misty haze. Let not a single one be troubled, Everyone must be joyful. Joy is not without reason— Tea and fruit offerings may cease for now. But if someone asks you for the price of a meal, What will you do then?" Then he added: "Return to the hall."

曹溪水、趙州茶、金牛飯、雲門餅、永安寺裡鐵饅頭。咬得永安寺裡鐵饅頭，方解吞得雲門餅；吞得雲門餅，方曉喫金牛飯、飲趙州茶，沾曹溪水。且道永安寺裡鐵饅頭作麼生？下口縱然咬得著，更問汝等是什滋味？若不知滋味，也須細嚼嚼始得。

> The waters of Cao Creek, Zhao Zhou's tea, the Golden Ox's rice, Yunmen's cakes, and the iron buns of Yong'an Temple. Only by biting into the iron buns of Yong'an Temple can you truly swallow Yunmen's cakes; only by swallowing Yunmen's cakes can you truly taste the Golden Ox's rice, drink Zhao Zhou's tea, and touch the waters of Cao Creek. Now tell me, what are the iron buns of Yong'an Temple? Even if you manage to take a bite, I ask you, what is their flavor? If you don't know the flavor, you must chew carefully until you find out.
