> Item 4: Repentance

> The \*Shi Chao\* states: "Because they have long followed erroneous beliefs and recklessly engaged in improper practices, now that they first seek refuge, they must overturn these misguided actions. The \*Agama\* and other scriptures all instruct them to first repent. The \*Nirvana Sutra\* says: 'Reveal all your wrongdoings—from the beginning of the cycle of birth and death, all the misdeeds you have committed, reveal them entirely, until there is no place left to go.' If repentance must be discussed, it should be practiced according to the occasion, through recitation and contemplation. This can also be applied universally."

> The \*Zichi Commentary\* states: "First, the intention is explained. As long as one has not taken refuge in the Three Jewels, it is all called holding wrong beliefs. Following along with birth and death is all called wrong actions. The \*Agama\* section below provides an illustration. 'Nirvana and the cycle of birth and death meet at the beginningless time. The place that cannot be reached is the future limit.' This means that attaining Buddhahood and realizing great Nirvana is called 'Nirvana as the place that cannot be reached,' indicating that having reached the ultimate, there is nowhere further to go. The section beginning with 'must' points to the method. 'Adapting to the time' refers to explaining separately according to each individual. 'General application' refers to practices such as those in various sutras that simply repent of the ten evils of the three periods."<note place="inline">See \*Shishi Chaoji\*, Scroll 39</note>
