> Report to Yu Rong, Minister of Self-Discipline

蒙問及曹洞宗旨，此之一學最妙最玄，拈穴細金針，穿芒長玉線，彩空中色相，織劫外花紋。若非家裏人，竟不識家裏事，非功力能到、非智識能知，惟沒巴鼻道人始全身擔荷，辨荎草之味似不難耳。想居士天資近道，當深留意，莫錯過此一段大事因緣，此生不打徹，他時後日定悔恨在。莫言貧衲不為居士說破，決欲發明此事，不妨以眾善助之，譬如雨露滋嘉苗也。

> You asked about the core teachings of the Caodong school. This practice is the most subtle and profound — like threading a fine needle with a delicate gold thread, stringing a long jade strand, weaving colors in empty space, and embroidering patterns beyond time. Unless you are an insider, you simply will not understand insider matters. This cannot be reached through effort or known through intellect. Only those who have let go of all attachments can fully take it on. Recognizing the flavor of the "nettle plant" is not difficult. I imagine you, layperson, have a natural affinity for the Way. You should pay close attention and not miss this great karmic opportunity. If you do not thoroughly break through in this life, you will surely regret it later. Do not say that I, this poor monk, did not explain it clearly to you. If you are determined to awaken to this matter, it is fitting to support it with various good deeds — just as rain and dew nourish fine sprouts.
