### 八關戒序

> Preface to the Eight Precepts

眾生受佛戒，即入諸佛位，位同大覺已，真是諸佛子。此菩薩戒，非八關戒也。然戒有大小，體非異同；戒有廣略，理無分析；戒有斷續，性絕開遮。自非利生大士，不無犯于塵勞，有力行人何難行于頃刻，躋緣生之道岸；一日之齋，通累劫之津梁。一日之戒，謾言瑣細具得全功，不論短長頓同全戒。譬如飲海一滴，味同全海；又如一滴投海，同海全波。須知戒淺功深，因微果徹，興聖人之方便，悲開詣實之權；標大士之指歸，喜見從權之實。清山主撮其簡要，吳太史覈其攸同，收圓行于一時，植殊因于永劫，不揀貴賤，勿論智愚，但辦堅實心腸，定入華嚴藏海。

> When a living being receives the Buddha's precepts, they enter the very rank of all Buddhas. This rank is equal to great enlightenment, and they are truly a child of the Buddha. This Bodhisattva precept is not the same as the Eight Precepts. Precepts may be great or small, but their essence is neither different nor the same. Precepts may be broad or condensed, but their principle cannot be divided. Precepts may be kept fully or partially, but their nature transcends allowances and prohibitions. Unless one is a great being who works for the benefit of others, it is not without falling into worldly dust. For a capable practitioner, what difficulty is there to practice even for a moment and reach the shore of conditioned arising? One day of fasting serves as a ferry for countless eons. One day of keeping the precepts—do not say it is trivial, for it brings full merit entirely. No matter whether short or long, it instantly equals the full precepts. It is like drinking a single drop of ocean water: its taste is the same as the whole ocean. Or like a single drop falling into the ocean: it becomes one with the entire sea of waves. Know that the precepts may be shallow, yet their merit is deep; the cause may be small, yet the fruit is fully realized. They open the skillful means of the sages, and compassion opens the provisional truth that points to the ultimate. They mark the direction for great beings, and joy sees the reality within the provisional means. Mount Qing's master collected the essential points, and Historian Wu verified what is common among them, gathering complete practice within a single moment, planting a special cause for endless eons. No distinction is made between noble and lowly, no division between wise and foolish. Only with a resolute and steadfast mind will one surely enter the treasury of the Avatamsaka Ocean.
