### 第一項　示名

> Item One: Revealing the Name

▲事鈔云『雜心云、有舍利名塔、無者名支提。　塔、或名塔婆、或云偷婆。此云塚也亦云方墳支提云廟。廟者貌也』

> The "Shi Chao" says: "The 'Za Xin Lun' states that a stupa containing relics is called a 'ta,' while one without relics is called a 'zhiti.' The 'ta' is also called 'tap'o' or 'toupo.'<note place="inline">In Chinese, this means 'tomb,' and is also called a 'square mound.'</note> 'Zhiti' means 'shrine.'<note place="inline">A shrine is so called because it embodies a sacred presence.</note>"

資持釋云『初示名。舍利及塔、名通凡聖。今明造立、多是佛塔、亦通餘聖。無名支提謂安形像、故下釋云廟貌也。　塔或下翻釋。』見事鈔記卷三十七

> The Commentary on the Four-Part Vinaya explains: "First, the name is explained. Relic shrines and stupas are names that apply to both ordinary beings and sages. Here, what is discussed as being built is mostly buddha stupas, though it also applies to other sages. What is called a 'chaitya' without a specific name refers to where an image is enshrined; therefore, the following explanation says it means 'shrine image.'
