序
Preface
The great Way is vast and open, transcending all forms and distinctions. What is black-robed or white-robed? What is sacred or ordinary? From ancient times, the venerable masters wielded the "sword that cuts off the hair" to sever sentient beings' root of life—none surpassed the Linji school in breaking through conventional views. Linji passed through seventeen generations to Master Duanqiao Lun; Lun passed through eleven to Master Jingshan Chong; Chong transmitted to Xingshan Guang; Guang transmitted to Puming Yong.
Our Venerable Jinming Jie was Puming Yong's direct heir, transmitting the dharma to over thirty people. Among them, my dharma-brother Cian of Pingshan was foremost. Master Puguang Tan'an Jun, a Chan master of towering natural endowments, traveled to many places and was praised everywhere, yet never accepted approval. Finally, at Pingshan's gate, he found perfect accord like water mixing with milk, and thus received the prophecy of enlightenment.
I observed the master's bearing—sheer cliff-like austerity; listening to his discourse—a cool breeze of serenity. When I hold and read the "Recorded Sayings of Puguang," it is like a great jewel-lamp illuminating the nine heavens—who dares gaze directly? Gaze directly, and his eyes would be blinded. I press my palms together and rejoice, saying: "The branch of Duanqiao will soon flourish mightily." For this reason, I strongly urged its publication, leaving it for all conscious beings to chew and gnaw as they will. Sons and grandsons will appear everywhere—truly inconceivable.
