Udāna Sutta (自說經)

二

Second.

Thus have I heard. At that time, the World-Honored One had just realized perfect enlightenment and was dwelling beneath the Bodhi tree on the banks of the Nerañjara River in Uruvelā. At that time, the World-Honored One sat in full lotus posture, continuing to enjoy the bliss of liberation for seven days. After seven days, the World-Honored One arose from meditation and, in the middle of the night, contemplated the dependent origination of all phenomena in reverse order: "When this does not exist, that does not exist; when this ceases, that ceases. That is: with the cessation of ignorance, volitional formations cease; with the cessation of volitional formations, consciousness ceases; with the cessation of consciousness, name-and-form ceases; with the cessation of name-and-form, the six sense bases cease; with the cessation of the six sense bases, contact ceases; with the cessation of contact, feeling ceases; with the cessation of feeling, craving ceases; with the cessation of craving, clinging ceases; with the cessation of clinging, becoming ceases; with the cessation of becoming, birth ceases; with the cessation of birth, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair cease. Thus, this entire mass of suffering ceases." The World-Honored One, knowing this, then uttered this inspired utterance:

"Indeed, there are diligent ones, The Brahmin who practices meditation, When they truly comprehend all things, They understand the cessation of all conditions, And all their doubts are dispelled."
