> Three

如是我聞。爾時，世尊住舍衛城祇陀林給孤獨園。爾時，舍衛城之人人過度執諸欲，樂彼貪醉，渴望狂喜，住著諸欲而度日。眾多之比丘晨早著內衣持鉢衣，往舍衛城托鉢，食後由托鉢歸來，近於世尊，禮敬世尊，坐於一隅。坐於一隅之諸比丘如是白世尊言：「大德！此處舍衛城之人人……乃至……住著於諸欲而度日。」世尊知此已，彼時唱此優陀那：

> Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. At that time, the people of Sāvatthī were deeply attached to sensual pleasures, delighting in them, intoxicated by craving, longing for excitement, and living their days absorbed in such desires. Then, in the morning, a number of monks dressed, took their bowls and robes, and went into Sāvatthī for alms. After their meal, on returning from alms-round, they approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and sat down to one side. Seated there, they said to the Blessed One: "Venerable Sir, here in Sāvatthī, the people are deeply attached to sensual pleasures, delighting in them, intoxicated by craving, longing for excitement, and living their days absorbed in such desires." Understanding this, the Blessed One spoke on that occasion this inspired utterance:

「執諸欲著諸欲者，未見有過於結使，此蓋執著結使者，未為渡此廣大河。」

> "Those who cling to desires and become attached to them have never seen anything more harmful than these mental fetters. This covering that grasps and binds through attachments—it has not yet been crossed over this vast river."
