> Chapter 1: The Buddha Land

> Once, the Buddha was in the garden of Âmra trees in Vaiśālī, surrounded and honored by countless beings — hundreds of thousands of them — as he taught the Dharma. At that time, in the city of Vaiśālī, there was a wealthy elder’s son named Ratnākara (Treasure Store), who came to the Buddha together with five hundred other sons of wealthy elders. Each brought along a precious seven-jeweled canopy to offer to the Buddha. They bowed their heads to the Buddha’s feet and offered their canopies in devotion. Through the Buddha’s spiritual power, all those jeweled canopies merged into a single canopy that covered the entire trichiliocosm — a vast universe of a thousand million worlds. And this entire world, in all its breadth and expanse, appeared reflected within that single canopy. At that moment, the entire assembly pressed their palms together in reverence, gazing upon the Buddha’s honored face without turning away for even an instant. Then, Ratnākara, the elder’s son, spoke a verse in praise before the Buddha.

> The Dharma King's power surpasses all beings, He ever gives the Dharma's wealth to all. He skillfully discerns all marks of phenomena, Unmoved within the ultimate truth's domain. Master of all dharmas, free and unconstrained, I bow my head to this great Dharma King. His teaching neither says "it is" nor "is not"— All dharmas rise through causes and conditions. Three times he turned the Wheel in the great universe— That Wheel is by its nature ever pure. Gods and humans gain the Way, this is the proof, The Triple Gem thus manifests in the world. With this wondrous Dharma he rescues sentient beings— Receiving once, they never backslide, ever serene. Though with one voice the Buddha speaks the Dharma, Each being understands according to their kind. I bow to him who cuts all bondage's ties, I bow to him who's reached the other shore. He knows completely all beings' coming and going, Skilled in all dharmas, he attains liberation. Unattached to the world, like a lotus flower, He ever walks the path of stillness and emptiness. He penetrates all marks of dharmas without hindrance— I bow to him who's like space, relying on nothing.

> At that time, the elder's son Ratnākara, having spoken these verses, said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, I only ask that you teach about the pure land practice of all bodhisattvas." The Buddha said, "Ratnākara, sentient beings themselves are the buddha-field of a bodhisattva. Why is this? A bodhisattva takes hold of a pure land solely for the sake of benefiting all beings. It is like someone who wishes to build a palace on open ground—they can do so freely, unimpeded. But if they try to build it in empty space, it will never succeed. In the same way, a bodhisattva vows to attain a buddha-field in order to help beings. Those who vow to attain a buddha-field do not do so in empty space. Therefore, Ratnākara, if a bodhisattva wishes to attain a pure land, they should purify their own mind. When the mind is pure, the buddha-field is pure." At that time, Shariputra, empowered by the Buddha, had this thought: "If it is truly the case that when a bodhisattva's mind is pure, the buddha-field is pure, then when our World-Honored One was practicing as a bodhisattva, was his mind not pure? And yet this buddha-field appears so impure." The Buddha, knowing his thought, immediately said, "What do you think? Are the sun and moon not bright? Yet a blind person cannot see them." Shariputra replied, "That is not the case, World-Honored One. It is the blind person's fault, not the fault of the sun or moon." The Buddha said, "In the same way, Shariputra, it is because beings are burdened by their own faults that they do not see the majestic purity of the Thus-Come One's buddha-field. This is not the fault of the Thus-Come One. Shariputra, my land is pure, but you do not see it."
