The Abridged Outline of the Monastic Rules, compiled by the modern eminent monk Master Hongyi, is a concise outline of the foundational text of the Nanshan Vinaya School, *The Monastic Rules with Redundancies Removed and Deficiencies Supplemented*, authored by the Vinaya Master Daoxuan of the Tang Dynasty. During the Republican period, as Buddhism faced the transformations of the times, Master Hongyi, in order to facilitate learners in grasping the essentials of Vinaya studies, streamlined the profound structure of the original text into a clear and concise outline. The entire work employs a hierarchical outline format to systematically summarize the core contents of *The Monastic Rules*, including the upholding and violation of precepts, and the norms for the monastic community. This work continues the lineage of the Nanshan Vinaya tradition and serves as an important introductory guide for studying the precepts of Chinese Buddhism. It is acclaimed as a key document in the revival of modern Vinaya studies and holds irreplaceable instructional value for contemporary Buddhist Vinaya scholarship.
