> Showing the Valley's Sharpness to Chan Practitioner

> The ancient masters set a noble example. Anyone who wishes to restore the collapsing order and support the declining Dharma often sees people trapped in the web of intellectual understanding, unable to take a single step beyond it. In such moments, only by cutting it off completely can one forge a sharp weapon. Nowadays, there are still those who chase after words and phrases, using their minds and consciousness to grasp meanings, accumulating them within like someone with indigestion unable to digest food, which over time becomes an illness. It is better to always keep a precious sword at hand, and without asking whether it is Buddha or demon, draw it and cut. Those who can act here without hesitation can roam freely throughout the universe, unhindered by wind or rain. When encountering those without blood under their skin or eyes without light, it is noble to take direct responsibility, not to evade or push away. Why bother with knocking tiles, striking bricks, or offering sacrifices to ghosts? As the elder Yuanwu said, "It is like leading someone to the edge of a ten-thousand-foot cliff and pushing them off to end their life. If you push them on level ground, even until Maitreya descends, they will never truly die. It is like being in a dream, wanting to wake but unable to." Those who can wield such a fierce hand not only shatter the dark barrel of ignorance but also hold firmly to the great responsibility of guiding others, truly grasping the mind-seal of the ancients and revealing the highest truth of our time. How can they allow people to dwell in intellectual knowledge? If one is merely accommodating and compromising, even if they pass through golden locks and mysterious barriers, they will ultimately become stuck and stagnant. Do not think you are opening the right path for them—you will only cause each one to lean east and west, and over time, on the long road, it will be hard to find even one who does not lag behind the Buddha. Those who occupy this position must first correct their own vision, not allowing strange delusions to obscure it. Why? It is like a vast blue sea: all phenomena come before it, and none can escape being reflected. Have you not heard of Linji serving under Deshan? Deshan said, "I am tired." Linji replied, "Old man, what are you talking in your sleep?" Deshan struck him, and Linji overturned the meditation seat. Deshan then stopped. Look at how these two elders acted—swift as lightning, fast as wind. Unless the crown of your head splits open, your eyes fall away, and all obstacles dissolve, seeing the ancients is like viewing the moon through a silk curtain. Only when you reach such a state, like a lion king fearless and unafraid, unhindered by great light, can you be called a true hero. Is this achieved without reason?
