### 復嚴髻珠司馬

> Sima, Guardian of the Jeweled Crown

客秋九月，山事寂寥之際，道舊好音忽千里而至，依依遠情浹於心目中之感荷無可似者，入山之訂夫豈虛語？然所諭此一大事因緣，朽直是無可相為，蓋素諳居士根性利、理路純熟，朽若與麼提，居士早是與麼去了也。纔向者邊說，似又向那邊走脫了也。總饒舉似一則兩則直截現成底公案，設或驀提得去，便把個孤明歷歷見聞覺知、動轉施為底以為究竟，似者般底提起便有、纔放下便無，等閒遇著一個咬豬狗手腳底，當面一拶，直是無可抵當，況生死分上能用得著耶？故朽不羨居士有目機銖兩底眼，願有一口吞盡乾坤不遺蹤跡底力量。古李都尉云：「參禪須是鐵漢，著手心頭便判，直趍無上菩提，一切是非莫管。」是甚麼力量？是甚麼面目？居士實實得到如此便休，不然待親到雪竇，有個商量處。

> In the quiet autumn of the ninth month, as mountain affairs grew still, a cherished letter from an old friend arrived from afar, its heartfelt sentiments warming both heart and sight—such gratitude is beyond words. Your intention to enter the mountains—was it spoken in vain? Yet regarding this great matter of karmic connection, this humble one truly has nothing to offer. Knowing well your sharp faculties and refined understanding, if I were to speak of it, you would have already grasped it. The moment words point here, the mind seems to slip away there. Even if I were to present one or two direct, ready-made cases, should you suddenly seize upon them, you might mistake that clear, solitary awareness—the seeing, hearing, perceiving, and acting—as the ultimate truth. Such things appear when grasped, vanish when released. If you casually encounter a true master who can cut through delusion, with a single pressing inquiry, you would find yourself with nothing to rely on—how then could such understanding serve you at the moment of life and death? Therefore, I do not envy your keen, discerning eye; rather, I wish for you the power to swallow heaven and earth whole, leaving not a trace. As the ancient Minister Li once said: "To engage in Zen, one must be iron-willed; Upon grasping it, the heart decides directly, Rushing straight toward unsurpassed enlightenment, Caring not for all rights and wrongs." What kind of power is this? What kind of true face? If you can genuinely reach this, it is enough. If not, wait until you personally arrive at Snowy Peak—there, we may find a way to discuss it further.
