### 勘辨機緣

> Examining Conditions and Opportunities

師寓宿三臺，與僧坐次，師問僧：「你一向親近何人？」僧云：「壁觀和尚。」師云：「如何是壁觀家風？」僧云：「行住坐臥。」師云：「離卻行住坐臥道看。」僧豎指，師云：「隔靴抓癢漢。」復示一偈：「為獲金鱗上釣臺，幾番驚浪月方來。風雲縱許闍黎吐，不遇知音休放開。」

> The Master was staying overnight at Santai. While seated with a monk, the Master asked, “Who have you been following all along?” The monk replied, “The monk of wall-gazing.” The Master asked, “What is the household style of wall-gazing?” The monk said, “Walking, standing, sitting, lying down.” The Master said, “Now, tell me about it apart from walking, standing, sitting, and lying down.” The monk raised his finger. The Master said, “You’re just scratching an itch through your boot!” Then the Master offered this verse: “To catch a golden scale, I mount the fishing platform. Waves crash several times before the moon appears. Though winds and clouds may burst forth from your mouth, Unless you meet a true listener, do not let go.”

師問僧：「大道無根，因甚源流不止？」僧無語。師代云：「和尚是何心行？」僧便問：「如何是道？」師云：「鹿過後放箭。」

> The Master asked a monk: "The Great Way has no root—why, then, does its source and stream never cease?" The monk was silent. The Master answered on his behalf: "What intention does this Reverend have?" The monk then asked, "What is the Way?" The Master said, "Shoot the arrow after the deer has passed."

師問僧：「禪道各各有，問著如何對？」僧無語，師打。僧云：「和尚又多一番起倒。」師云：「何不早道？」

> The master asked a monk, "Everyone talks about the Zen path, but when asked about it, how do you respond?" The monk was silent, so the master struck him. The monk said, "Master, you've added another complication." The master replied, "Why didn't you say that earlier?"

師與眾同途，撞著一夥醉漢，一僧云：「一半是醉底。」一僧云：「一半是醒底。」師云：「看來醉也不醉，醒也不醒。」僧云：「怎奈各各倒地？」師云：「是他快活無憂處。」僧云：「秪是天暮，幾時歸家？」師云：「正是漢地不管秦不收。」

> A teacher was walking with the crowd when they happened upon a group of drunkards. One monk said: "Half of them are drunk." Another monk said: "Half of them are sober." The teacher said: "As I see it, they're not drunk, and they're not sober either." A monk asked: "But what about each one lying on the ground?" The teacher said: "That's just where their carefree happiness lies." The monk asked: "But it's getting dark—when will they go home?" The teacher said: "Precisely: No one from the Han territory cares, and no one from the Qin territory takes them in."

師問僧：「在甚處來？」僧云：「靈隱。」師云：「飛來峰幾時飛到？」僧無語。師云：「你未到靈隱。」進云：「覺海呼猿洞也常隨喜。」師云：「見猿麼？」進云：「未見。」師呼僧名，僧應諾。師云：「猿出洞了。」

師問僧：「你在甚處來？」僧云：「峨山來。」師云：「聞峨山崩倒無蹤，普賢在甚處安身？」僧云：「不知。」師云：「在上座肩頭腳底，一息不離，因甚不知？」僧禮拜，師當頭一蹋，云：「自起自倒作麼？」

師問僧：「你在甚處來？」僧云：「洋淘溪。」師云：「與誰作伴？」僧云：「無。」師打云：「你過我獨木橋時，腳生酸澀，何言無？」僧云：「謝和尚指示。」師云：「較量則失。」

一晚，大眾至方丈請開示，師喚行者閉卻門，息了燈燭，復高聲云：「看此事，抬頭不見天，低頭不見地。」拈拄杖亂打出：「父母所生日，終不與子道。」

師問僧：「在甚處來？」僧云：「峨山來。」師云：「沿途有塘，汝作麼過？」僧云：「太平無禁忌。」師云：「既是太平，又來者裏討甚麼碗？」僧喝，師連棒打出。

師一日同眾向火，朱居士問：「《金剛經》云：三心不可得。未審如何得？」師伸手云：「老僧向火，許多快活。」士云：「未有紙墨時，真經在何處？」師云：「夾岸桃花風雨後，馬蹄無處避殘紅。」

施資眾善：何大全李氏男顯應楊氏蘇霖老母陳氏任恒王氏男生員之傑楊氏孫男全杜氏孫男神祐再祐小祐正任忠杜氏陳光燦何氏孫男生員爾常王氏生員公列楊氏男圓愷，仝刊不會和尚語錄，祈生生善果恒存，個個福海長清。　嗣法門人法衍、法玉對。嗣法門人慶雲識。　嘉禾倪爾純刊。康熙三十年中秋月嘉興楞嚴藏經坊存板。
