> Reply to Elder Monk Sanfeng Shuokui<note place="inline">Attached Letter</note>

> Since the years of You and Xu, I have farmed by the riverside, and though we are brothers of the same source, letters have been silent for over twenty years. From afar, I hold your virtuous reputation in high regard, extending even to withered sprouts, never ceasing to think of you in my heart and praise you with my words. How could my unworthy talent presume to occupy the ancestral seat? Yet the duty of tending the temple grounds cannot be declined. I have often wished to carry incense and personally pay respects at your teaching seat, to express my long-held admiration, to behold the grandeur of our ancestral hall, and to listen at the side to the lion's roar played solo. But temple matters keep me detained, and my private wishes cannot be fulfilled—words fail to convey my embarrassment. You have, nonetheless, shown me great kindness with generous gifts; how dare I accept them without gratitude? I respectfully send back your office register, completing the honor roll, keeping it for recitation and study, rejoicing in the benefit of the Dharma. Though I and the Venerable have long shared a spiritual bond, with open hearts, from now on I only hope the Venerable Brother will grant me your teachings, guiding my shortcomings, so that I may not stumble. Reading your compassionate letter thrice, I feel only sweat of shame on my back; having long been apart, I rejoice at the prospect of clasping sleeves in heartfelt talk. I also hear that the Venerable's Dharma steps are robust, your spiritual mind is harmonious, and recently your great works have flourished, with many achievements, completing what predecessors left unfinished—truly a magnificent contribution surpassing all, beyond what pen and tongue can praise. I write this first to express gratitude, though not all I wish to say is complete. As the weather cools, I still await the opportunity to call in person, my spirit reaching out to you as I set pen to paper.

> My Dharma brother, the venerable elder who succeeds the sacred seat—heaven and human hearts are in accord. Upon hearing this, I joined my palms and rejoiced, unable to contain my elation. Yet, pressed by the demands of building projects and bound by countless obligations, I have failed to offer my congratulations in a timely manner. Still, my spirit has wandered to your side—from the thirteenth day of the fifth month to this very day, my mind has been turning ceaselessly, like a spinning wheel within my heart. Though this temple is honored as the ancestral mountain, every beam and tile has emerged from the very tip of a single hair of our late Dharma uncle. My brother is the rightful heir of the elder Pōu, the direct descendant of Master Hàn, and having long kept his scales hidden, now is the moment when his voice shall rise and stir the winds and rains. I only wish that he remain seated without rising, dwelling here for a hundred years, watching his children and grandchildren spread across the great Tang land—this is the hope of our community, and our good fortune as well. The temple's rector, Dānfāng, was once graced with your kind attention, and I have sent him, along with the attendant monk Shíyǐn, to pay respects on my behalf nine times. It is not that I dare claim this suffices as congratulations—rather, it is a small gesture to atone for my neglect. I pray that you take good care of yourself in all things.
