> Nest and Twig Collection: Preface

> The true Dharma eye transmitted from Vulture Peak, the broken sand bowl passed down in the Eastern lands—those who carried and preserved the teaching were not only the forty-seven patriarchs or the twenty-three ancestors, but many other sages and saints who descended into the world. Yet ever since the assembly at Caoxi disbanded, anyone who emerged to take the lead, to raise the banner of the Dharma and establish its principles, was seen as surpassing the Buddha and patriarchs, with learning that bridged heaven and humanity. Alas! The mythic bird Yujia does not appear every generation, nor does the flying dragon arise at every turn. As the years stretch on and the ages grow distant, pheasants begin to mimic the phoenix, peacocks impersonate the golden pheasant. In such times, the world has few who skillfully teach all beings, and many whose virtue leads only to reclining in clouds. Thus the path of spreading the Dharma has become something that the aloof and lofty dismiss with disdain.

> The wise ones who retreat to nature and those who engage with the world are the same at heart—if their circumstances were swapped, they would act the same. But if a recluse merely indulges in hills and valleys, gazing at the clouds for their own sake, then his detachment is just as misguided as the worldly person's frivolous ambitions. How could such a one give life to rocks and springs, or inspire the spirit of the mountains?

> The eminent Chan Master Lingzhang Yun of Yuhang was gifted with extraordinary spiritual aptitude and noble character that set him apart from others. Moreover, he lived not far from the legacy of Huangniu and close to the tradition of Fengxue. A solitary practitioner, he was accustomed to chanting through the night—a habit he had long cultivated. I recall thirty years ago, when I had grown weary of pilgrimage to various monastic gatherings, the master had just abandoned his scriptural studies to pursue the Chan teachings of Taibai. At that time, the assembly of awakened monastics numbered over three thousand! I regarded him as a unicorn among the five-colored herd, a phoenix among the nine-plumed flock—for his spirit stood alone, impossible to rein in. Not long after, under the hammer and whisk of our teacher, he thoroughly penetrated the primal source. Later, when I left the mountain, I invited the master to join me in retreat at Hanshang. Thus, our companionship was the longest and our bond the deepest. Yet the master, a solitary Zhejiang native, and I, a stubborn Cantonese, saw through the transient currents of our time and shared a resolve never to push ourselves before others. Over the years, lacking steadfastness, I was swept along by karmic winds. In the last decade or more, my influence spread undesirably north of the Yellow River and south of the Yangtze—like the ocean god raising waves, impossible to contain! But the master's vow stood firm as a mountain, unshaken by the five desires and eight winds. Grasping his crude axe, brewing tea over a cold brazier, his steps grew mossy, his gate seldom saw chariot tracks. People admired his virtue from afar, bowing toward the green peaks and the sound of his bell—rarely did they glimpse his face.

> When clouds parted and the moon seemed to sing, stirred by the scenes and circumstances, he diligently poured forth writings. They make those who see or hear feel as if clear music is ringing in their ears and white snow has landed on their lapels—boundless and far-reaching! One cannot help but rise above the world. From this we see that even the master's incidental words can so move our hearts—how much more so his profound teaching?
